R.I.P. Dan Roundfield

Just read that former Central Michigan player Dan Roundfield drowned while vacationing in Aruba, apparently while helping to save his wife. He led the Chips to a MAC championship in 1974-75, breaking the hearts of Falcon hoops fans as they beat us in overtime in Anderson arena, winning the champions...

Re: Best NFL Player from BG (all-time)

I'd have to go with Villapiano. Bernie Casey had some good years with the 49ers and Rams. I remember Reynolds being honored at a basketball game back in the '70s. He was a BIG man. Looked like he was wearing shoulder pads even dressed in a suit and tie.

Boy, that's contingency that hasn't had to be considered since Barry Sanders was making Wayne Fonts look like he actually knew something about coaching. I wonder what Scott Mitchell is doing these days?

Re: So Long, Peace Pipe

No biggie. But the creators of this new trophy deserve a giant FAIL! Why not publicize one last game as the final battle for the peace pipe with the winner getting it forever? And pay no attention to that corporate check behind the curtain. Excellent idea! And I have to wonder if the Peace Pipe is ...

Re: From the SI Vault: "Never Leave Ohio"

Thanks for posting this. I actually remember reading it when it first appeared -- yes, I'm old -- but hadn't thought about it in a long time.

Re: Sentinel Article on Gregg Brandon

Interesting reading the thoughts on Brandon of some here. His tenure reminds me at least in one way of Don Nehlen's in the early to mid 1970s. Nehlen was 53-35-4, and his teams upset Purdue, Syracuse and Southern Mississippi (and mabye BYU?), but he never won the MAC title. First he was up against t...

Re: Future construction plans for on campus?

I also found the comments on B.G.'s lack of style interesting, as they sounded like what many students were saying when I was a student in the early 1970s. I remember traveling to Miami with several friends for a football game and thinking B.G. certainly didn't have the same kind of charm -- althoug...

RIP Maurice Lucas

Maurice Lucas, the power-forward for the Portland Trailblazers who also earned All-American honors for Marquette University in the early 1970s, died earlier this week from bladder cancer. Lucas made at least one trip to Anderson Arena during the 1972-73 season. B.G. had a pretty good team, led by Co...

Re: Men's All-Anderson Tean Announced

I've got no problems with the players listed here, but I'd have to give a shout-out for Jeff Montgomery, the Falcon point-guard (although I don't think we used the term back then) from the 1972-73 season through 1974-75. As important as Cash was on that team, I had to think Monk was its heart and so...

Re: Greastest Victory For BGSU Football

I was at the first BG-Purdue game as well. It was an amazing win. I always remembered that Purdue had held Paul Miles in check for the entire game. Then, when they needed a stop to get the ball back late in the 4th quarter, Miles got outside and picked up something like 20 yards and a clinching firs...

Losing to Marshall, 12-10 in 1971 was a hard one to take. It was one of only two games Marshall won all year, following the plane crash that killed almost the entire team the year before. If Marshall hadn't beaten Xavier earlier in the year, Bowling Green might have been the "villains" eve...

While Komives may not have had the same type of NBA career as Thurmond, he had a very solid one. He played 10 years, and was a starter for both the Knicks and Pistons. He actually was playing ahead of Walt Fraizer in New York, before being traded to Detroit (along with Walt Bellamy) for Dave Debussc...

I made a couple of road trips to OU for games years ago and I always got the impression that a lot of people from the community and the surrounding area went to OU games. As several people have mentioned, they have a strong basketball tradition that seems to resist periods when the program is a litt...

MAC basketball was probably as good as it's ever been in the 60s to mid-70s. I've always thought part of the reason was that you had to win a conference to be assured of making the NCAA tournament -- even if your conference was bigger. One team made it from the Big 10, one from the Pac 8, one from t...
