Chicago Bears put out their first depth chart yesterday. Former BG star Freddie Barnes wasn't among the top eight wide receivers. Not looking good.
Maybe if the Bears cut him, he'll end up in Cleveland. The Browns can use the help.

A little perspective is needed...
...because what BG accomplished in 2003-04 is about as good as it can get for any MAC program. National rankings, national TV. Occasional mentions on ESPN or in USA Today. That's it, folks. That's the summit of the Matterhorn. Yes, Marshall and Miami each clawed their way to a #10 national finish in...

Again...
...I would put more stock in this "threat" if someone could name me one 1-a program that involuntarily got kicked down to 1-aa in the last 20 years.

Here we go...
...with the ridiculous concern of teams being dropped down. When's the last time that happened? Youngstown State voluntarily did so abotu 20 years ago. That's the only case I've even remotely heard of. On the other hand, at least 4 teams have jumped to d-1 in the last decade. The NCAA wants more d-1...

Sounds hard to say...
...that there's no shame in a 35-7 loss, but in this case it's true. OSU is loaded at many positions and BG hung in there with them for most of the game. It was a rout, but we weren't dominated. Felt the same way about the BG-Wisconsin game. The Cleveland Plain Dealer's OSU beat writer also made the...

The only thing I know...
...is that today I offered a co-worker who's an OSU grad and Columbus native to make a "loser wears the other school's sweatshirt to work" bet with BG only getting 15 points and she still wouldn't take it. I started at 35, dropped to 18 - the average margin in the last 3 BG-OSU games - and...

Was accepted at...
...BG, Toledo, Kent and Youngstown. BG and Toledo offered scholarships. The other two didn't. Growing up in Warren, had never been to BG or UT before. Visited BG on a very cold but sunny day. Visited UT on a little warmer, but rainy day. Looking back, weather may have played a psychological role. We...

I hereby second the motion to label the 1972 punt-for-a-first-down play by Eddie McCoy (or whoever it was) vs. Purdue as The Fake Punt of God.
That's good stuff.

The 03 NIU game was significant...
...but to most of the country, it was just a MAC team beating another MAC team. There had to be a lot of questioning along the lines of "Who's Northern Illinois and why are they #12?" And it's not like Northern's been ranked that high in the intervening years. They didn't go on a Marshall-...

And as for Toledo games...
...I think Rich Dackin led a pretty big last-minute win vs. the Rockettes in '89. May have thrown a winning td to Reggie Thornton or Ron Heard. BG finished 5-6 that year and UT at 6-5 - and it wasn't all that important historically, with BG still in the throes of the Ankney era - but I recall it bei...

No one else...
...ranked the '01 Northwestern win at the top?
That seemed to be the catalyst for the successes of the next few seasons. You could argue that BG is still riding the impact of that game, at least in areas of national recognition and recruiting.

Sadly, history...
...does not favor the Falcons in 2006. BG hasn't had 6 straight winning seasons since 1971-76. Since then, our beloved alma mater has been the very definition of a streaky program. To wit : 1977-81 - 5 losing (counting a .500 mark in '81) 1982-85 - 4 winning 1986-90 - 5 losing 1991-94 - 4 winning 19...

Realistically...
...there's about zero chance of Brandon getting canned, even if the Falcons go winless the rest of the way. The guy's won almost 70 percent of his games and has 2 bowl wins on his resume, even if you want to give Urban Meyer the credit for assembling those teams. Gary Blackney's BG coaching career e...

Just to clarify...
Miscues were :
1 - Blocked punt for TD.
2 - Allowed kick return TD.
3 - Had FG blocked.
4 - Missed XP in OT. (Blocked?)
Also wondering if Barnes did most of his running from theQB position? Or was he at RB?

The fact that...
...we just named 7 programs that have moved up to I-A - includng 6 that have done so in the last 10 years - yet we can't come up with a single one that was forced down to I-AA seems to make this a hollow threat from the NCAA.
