Softball drops first two in Florida...
BG taking part in the Stetson Spring Classic. Elon edged the Falcons 4-3 in their first game today and host Stetson shut out BG in their 2nd game, 5-0.
UGH. BG now 0-11...and have lost 5 games by one run.
The Falcons will face Cornell and Iowa tomorrow and finish with Michigan State Sunday.
Just get a win....

Still waiting for that first win....
Cornell beat BG, 7-0, and Iowa got past the Falcons, 2-0 in action yesterday.
This is getting really bad.
BG takes on Michigan State today with the first pitch in about 5 minutes.

Out of curiousity, I looked up the BG roster....SEVEN freshman out of 15 on the roster...I didn't realize how much we'd lost from last year. But obviously, this crew of frosh is having a harder time adjusting to college game than the B-Ball crew.
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)

Well each week I've talked about the problems purely from a look at the accumulated stats. Things have not changed. Team BA of .214 and low slugging and OBP. Fielding is 50 points below the opponets. A lot of the younger players are hitting well below the Mendoza line. But I do have a question. Is Weimer hurt or something? She has been our only effective pitcher. Yet she only pitched once in relief during the latest tournament.

Egads. 0-13...fredthefalcon brings up good points and I know we have a very young roster but we still have some top notch upperclassmen.
I guess it's just one of those things.
The good news is none of this counts when the MAC season starts...On March 28 against the team many picked to be a fave, Kent State.
Next weekend is the Buckeye Classic in Cbus...BG will face Robert Morris, OSU, Binghamton and EMU.
GO BEEG!!!

Actually, we have EIGHT Freshman and 3 SO on the 15 player roster...I hope the younger players get it going soon.

Freshman?
The number of Freshman cannot be an excuse. Salsburg has made it very clear that this years recruiting class are "her girls". Her success or failure is very much dependent on her commitment to them.
As far as "out of conference" being a time time for development and an excuse for 0 - 13. Last year she never deviated from the starting lineup unless there was an injury. There was no need to develop anyone else because this year she would have "her girls".
So far the only recruit hitting above .200 is Lines.

Take it easy, there. Yes, I think half the team being Freshman can be a reason why this team is struggling. A year ago they were all playing HS ball and they're trying to get used to the college game.
Look, I hate the fact BG is 0-13. But Coach Salsburg doesn't have the experience she had last year at this time.
Interesting words for your first post. Welcome to the site.

Patience
I will agree the move from high school to division one college softball is not trivial. You seem to be suggesting that we should exercise patience with new players who are initially struggling. If so, doesn’t it make sense to exercise similar patience with players who are initially successful?
Are you not concerned that the "my girls" factor may be weighted heavier then on the field performance?
As much as we may want to believe otherwise coaching decisions are subjective. However once subjective decisions are made one would hope results on the field would adjust the coaches initial evaluation.

Re: Patience
Frankly, the "my girls" factor is troublesome. This was a classic Temptations song and doesn't need to be forever associated with a sappy, overrated flim from the early 1990's.trump wrote: Are you not concerned that the "my girls" factor may be weighted heavier then on the field performance?
But seriously, I don't think any coach would purposely play inferior players simply to uphold some mysterious edict supposdly issued a year ago about incoming recruits. She is here to win games. She's won as an assistant coach in this conference, as a head coach last year at BG and there's no reason to believe she won't win in the future. We'll see if things can improve when conference play begins.

I'm not 100% sure what you're saying but I assume it is because we have two freshmen starters--one hitting .088 and the other O for the season and both with a 50% K ratio for ABs as opposed to one returning regular who has only batted 5 times all year. In addition, it appears Brittany Hay, another returning letterwinner, is no longer listed on the roster after even fewer ABs. Is that what your reference is?
Patience
No
Does anyone recall a Freshman throwing a no hitter in her college debut last year?
She only threw 8 more innings the rest of the season. Her line for the last seven weeks of the season was 1 inning pitched, zero runs, three strikeouts.
Last fall at the Speilman charity tournament at Ohio State she out dueled last years MAC player of the year from Kent State 3 - 0.
Salsburg's success is very dependent on her commitment to "her girls" so we can't allow that commitment to be an alibi.
