2010 Falcon Softball

Post by anchorman »

The ladies dropped two games on saturday. 9-0 vs Florida St and 5-3 to SMiss. I am just not sure how these ladies are gonna do this year. I like Salsburg, but she has dropped the ball a couple of times. The days of Rango, Vrabel, Heimrich, Baca, Zirkle, Gouge, Vallas, and Wiemer seem like so long ago. Those were the good days. HC Leigh Ross too!

Just seems a drop off in talent, although new girl Andrea Arney seems to be good!

How in the heck did they lose Sharon Palma BTW? She is doing awesome at Wright St. Not to mention completely shoved it down the Falcons throats last year!

If I had to bet the next HC to go at BGSU, I would bet its Salsburg. In some ways I hope not, I do like her, just not sure where the ship got turned wrong.

I have to admit I've been pretty disappointed the last couple seasons with Salsburg. She started nicely but lately, we've not been very good.

Yeah two seasons ago we didnt win a game before MAC play (though we did very well in MAC play) and last season was just bad, we barely made the MAC tournanment, and it doesnt help that we lost one of the best pitchers and overall players in school history due to graduation. Also, much like our former men's basketball coach, Salsburg has had issues with players quitting the team.

Anchorman, as for your question about Palma, I'm thinking it had to do with playing time, she was behind Wiemer and Gouge her freshmen year, probably would have been the same way her sophomore year, and would have still been behind Wiemer her junior year, so her playing time definately would have been uncertain, so I can't blame her for leaving. Like you I do like Salsburg, she always nice to me and a couple friends of mine who try to make as many games as we can, but if she cant get the ship turned around this season that may be it for her

FAclonCincy.....

I really miss Rango, Heimrich, Vrabel, Zirkle and Baca. All great players and very classy, nice, sweet young ladies. Especially Ashley Zirkle. She waited on me a couple times when she used to waitress and would always talk when I would go to the games.

Someone on an earlier thread about softball, it was last year, said that Salsburg should have given Palma more playing time and rode those three arms all the way to the MAC. I wonder if she would have stayed had Coach Ross not left for Cuse.

The point is that Leigh Shaw would NOT have left if the AD would just given her a little love and shown he wanted her to stay. Moneyu was not a big issure from my understanding. Now they are getting BIG cuts in their budget as well as taking money from their designated to help balance the books for the revenue sports that can't draw what they were expected to draw. The athletic department is a MESS and there is ONE person to blame.

Never knew Coach Ross would have stayed. That is a shame! She could recruit and coach! Well it looks like the AD might have to deal with some issues with softball if things dont' work out. I hope they do, but not looking promising.

Palma’s only issue with Salsburg was lack of opportunity. Salsburg was convinced Palma was not a D1 pitcher there were plenty of opportunities for her to put her on the field and allow her to fail. She wouldn't do it with a 6 run lead. She wouldn't do it in non league games. When Palma did not get a start in a non conference double header against Detroit Mercy it was obvious that something else was going on. It wasn’t attitude because they actual got along just fine but as I have posted before Salsburg was very committed to her recruits. After the 2007 year end review it was made clear that Palma was not part of Salsburg’s future plans so with the universities approval Palma was allowed to explore other options. Despite offers of a near full ride elsewhere Palma wanted to come back to BG (at considerable expense). She understood that it would be easier to compete with Salsburg’s recruit once they were both on campus. Salsburg denied Palma’s request to come back because of the precedent it would set which is understandable.

So she didn't think Palma was a D1 pitcher huh? The same Palma that returned to BG last year and won both games in a double header?!

Anyways, I see your points and thanks for clarifying the issue.

As for the ladies, good weekend and a nice victory over Va Tech 3-2.

While we are on the subject. Anyone know why Megan McPherson, Kari Steigerwald, and Desiree Miller left the program? McPherson and Steigerwald graduated from BGSU, but Miller went somewhere down in florida.

The team appears to be losing three or four players a year. Is this normal for softball?
