BG is headed to the Louisville Regional

Arguably one the toughest overall Regionals out there this year with #1 Louisville, #2 Miami (FL) and #3 seed Oklahoma State joining us. Those seeds aren't national seeds, they are Regional seeds. But when the #3 seed is still from a power conference and not a "mid-major" you have your work cut out for you. BG is also the only team in the field of 64 with a losing record. Funny how they put us in with Louisville instead of North Carolina, Vanderbilt, or Louisiana State. You'd figure that we would've been put in the same region as the #1 overall seed, seeing as we're the worst #4 seed in the field.

Glad to see that the NCAA baseball tournament isn't put together with a hard S-curve.

Funny how they put us in with Louisville instead of North Carolina, Vanderbilt, or Louisiana State. You'd figure that we would've been put in the same region as the #1 overall seed, seeing as we're the worst #4 seed in the field.

One of the reasons why is the NCAA does try and consider placing teams within a region near the Regionals. If Valpo didn't make the field this year BG very well could have ended up in the Bloomington Regional along those lines. The fact that we ended up in Louisville still keeps us regionally located as both Bloomington and Louisville are relatively close to Bowling Green, Ohio. This weighs heavily as to why we weren't placed with a nationally-seeded team. But obviously there are some situations where it doesn't work out and teams must travel far. In most every year teams from the Northeast must travel and wind up scattered everywhere. Since most teams who usually host normally fall in the Southeast and Southwest, the NCAA desperately wants to spread out host sites (which schools in contention for must bid on). Teams like Indiana and Kansas State hosting is a perfect example as the Midwest and Plains sites help spread it out a little bit, as does the Pacific Northwest locations with Oregon an Oregon State. That said, because of seeding and avoiding conference rematches in Regionals, more adjusting is needed. The NCAA is also not fond of placing Regional sites close together such as you see with the Eugene and Corvallis Regionals, or the Chapel Hill and Raleigh Regionals, or UCLA and Cal State Fullerton both hosting, or even the Charlottesville and Blacksburg Regionals. But they aren't going to not award teams due to proximity either. All in all there's no perfect science, but when you weigh all the factors they have to work with and around, they usually do a decent job each year.
