Falcon baseball CHAPIONS

With our win today and WMU loss, we are no worse than a tie for the Championship and with one more win or loss by WMU are the SOLE champions!

This has been a really magical season. The Falcons were picked 8th in pre-season, I believe, and came roaring out of the gate winning their first 17 MAC games. That gave them some cushion as they battled through the long regular season.

With a big assist from Central Michigan today (which beat then second-place WMU in both games of a doubleheader) and the 7-1 win against EMU today, the Falcons clinched at least a share of the title. A win by BG in any of the remaining 4 games (one against EMU and 3 against scUT), gives them the outright title. Hopefully, they can have it wrapped up by the time they return to BG from this weekend series with a win on Sunday.

BG stands at 20-6 in MAC play (28-18 overall)
Ball State is 16-10
WMU is 16-11
Toledo is also 16-11
Miami is 17-12
Kent 15-11
Northern 12-15
Ohio 10-16
Eastern 9-17
Akron 9-17
Central 6-20

BG's 20 wins in MAC play are the most (tied) since 1999, and if they can win 22 in conference, they can tie the program's all-time record (also set in 1999). If they can get to 23, they would set a new school record.

Great season from the most successful men’s program at BGSU. Great job by the players and coaches!

After their last regular season title in 2009, Greg Christopher cut 1/3rd of the team’s scholarships and a chunk of the operating budget.

Hopefully our current AD recognizes success and rewards the program…they are long overdue for it.

I think it's already been well established that Christopher was an idiot.

And the last AD who tried to eliminate baseball ended up having to find a new job. I'm not saying it was the sole reason he ended up being let go, but I do believe it played a part in that decision.

It was not the sole reason he was let go (he should have been gone before Covid), but his assistant was just as involved in the decision to cut it as he was. Thank you Holy Cross.

BG clinches the MAC series win by defeating Toledo 8-6 at Fifth Third Field Friday night, and moves their record to 31-18 overall and 23-6 in the conference. The regular season finale will take place Saturday afternoon at Stellar Field, as the Falcons will try to sweep the season series by winning all four games. The two teams also played a non-league game on April 30, which BG won 17-9.

Ball St has really come on since we pounded them in Muncie. If we get thru to the MAC championship, it'll be against them most likely. They'll be looking for some revenge.

I'd like to see Newman back in the rotation and line up for the Tourny. I have not heard anything about him since he was out of the lineup. He missed a start pitching but still DH for a few games and then was out completely since then.

BG concludes an historic season by beating scUT for the 4th time in four tries, 3-2 at Stellar Field.

The Falcons finish with a new school conference record of 24-6 and an overall mark of 32-18.

Here's hoping they can win the tournament and get the NCAA bid they richly deserve.

I have to say I will never understand creating a tournament to determine the NCAA representative over giving that bid to the regular season champion. In basketball it makes some sense because it brings in so much money for some conferences -- but that's not the case in sports like baseball.

Even with the monetary considerations, I wish they'd just give the bids to regular season league champions in any sport -- because they earned it the hard way over a period of months.
