KEYS WIN FIRST PLAYOFF GAME SINCE 1990, DEFEATING LYNCHBURG, 3-2
REIMOLD EARNS PLAYER OF THE GAME HONORS
Frederick, MD -- The Frederick Keys won their first playoff game since 1990, as Gera Alvarez's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Nolan Reimold to lift the Keys past the Lynchburg Hillcats, 3-2.
Reimold was the Keys Offensive Player of the Game, going 3-for-4 with two runs in the victory. Reimold also stole two of the Keys four bases in the victory.
The Hillcats struck first in the top of the second inning when Pat Magness scored on a throwing error by shortstop Travis Brown, giving the Hillcats a 1-0 edge.
Brandon Chaves scored from third base in the top of the fifth inning when Taber Lee grounded into a fielder's choice, getting Nyjer Morgan thrown out at second base, but giving Lynchburg a 2-0 lead.
The Keys cut the lead in half, as Jeff Fiorentino walked, stole second base and advanced to third base on a throwing error by catcher Mike McCuistion, before Branden Florence's ground out to shortstop brought him across the plate.
The Keys tied the score in the bottom of the seventh inning as Reimold led off with a single, and stole second base. Travis Brown singled, and Brandon Chaves throw to first went wide of the bag enabling Reimold to advance home bringing the score to 2-2.
In the bottom of the ninth inning Reimold again led off with a single and stole second base. Bryan Bass' ground out to second base moved Reimold to third base, before Alvarez flied out deep enough to right field to allow Reimold to score the game-winning run.
Chris Britton (1-0) earned the victory tossing 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.
Chris Yount (0-1) took the loss allowing a run on one hit over 1.2 innings.
The Keys and Hillcats will meet for Game Two of the Carolina League North Divisional Playoffs in Lynchburg on Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. Carolina League Pitcher of the Year James Johnson will start for the Keys against LHP Josh Shortslef.
