The loss of Men's track and field at BGSU had little to do with title IX. If that were the case, every major university in the country would be in trouble, and they're not. The mega schools run a full slate of men's interscholastic sports as do the Div IAA and Div II schools. It's only a handful of Div I schools that tamper with the men's programs. It's all a matter of money. JUST MONEY! The title IX is bulllllllllll!
FYI, the reasons behind alot of that are currently being discussed here:Dr. Reality wrote:The loss of Men's track and field at BGSU had little to do with title IX. I was in the room when paul krebs cut our team. I was a sophomore at the time. And from research compiled by team mates coaches and parents we discovered that title ix was just an excuse and krebs was trying to find a way to cut loses. Only 3 people were involved in the decision to cut 4 teams (Krebs and 2others on his pay roll one of which was quite pregnant at the time). We were told after the fact that raising 1 to 4 million dollars would get the team back, later when they found out the track team was willing to do this, they said there is now amount of money that would bring back the team.
As for scholarships, football has 85 and I believe only 56 can be activeated for a game. The track team had only 5-8 scholarships. Zerian Peterson who was a 3time MAC champion recieved the most money on the team at 85%.
But blame krebs for cutting the track team. And blame krebs for atleast 4 other mac schools cutting track over the next 2 years to follow

You have no clue. Would you have rather had him keep the sports that were cut and see the department go further in debt? Because had these cuts not taken place that is just what would have happened. Does it suck, yes. Was it necessary, absolutly! I would have made the same decision. And from the start it was made very clear that title IX had something to do with what got cut, not that things needed to be cut. Carry on beating this dead horse now...

I think things could have been resolved in a better way. Like telling the coaches the team was in jeapordy. Our coach brought up the subject when he was hired three years ealier. Its not like this is a financial problem just fell into the ADs lap. the coaches found out the morning we did and were told not to tell us.
You have no idea where im coming from with this or what I know about the decision that was made. The original post was about why we didnt have a track team anymore. Im sure an AD with more class would have handled the situation better. Atleast krebs isnt the toledo AD. Their track team found out from a phone call on their way to a track meet.
And of course i cant expect someone who believes that the bg mens singing team is "america's finest singing machine" to understand how layered this issue is.

Not to take sides on the issue, but the way Krebs acted is no different from many ADs. Michigan State cut its men's gymnastic team with no warning (and after Izzo got a huge bonus for winning a Natl Championship). If you dig deep enough you will find many programs cut very similarily. (most of them you don't really hear about because they are the men's gymnastics team or rifle teams) Sucks I know, but that seems to be the way things are done, like mass layoffs and what not, very abrupt. Lots of different schools of thought on this, someone is bound to get hurt by it however, whichever way it happens.reyray82 wrote:Now what are you talking about? Please... You bore me

I can understand how you feel on the issue, I had several friends on both the swimming/diving and tennis teams at the time. While the cuts might have been financially needed I certainely expect to see future AD's working to bring these teams back to campus.

And you have no idea where I am comming from. I watched a very good friend of mine, who was on the swim team, bury his head in a bottle for about a week after the announcement was made. I also did a lot of digging into the financial aspect of was was going on. All of it is public record. As far as informing the coaches, would you want to know at the beginning of the season this may be your last and have that weighing on your shoulders all season? There was a reason not to let this go too public and it was all in the best inerests of the athletes. Their focus needed to be on performing the best they could, not pondering if there would be a team the next season.reyray82 wrote:Now what are you talking about? Please... You bore me

Would you have rather heard about the decision from your coach, or from the person who made the decision? If you think it was easy for him to do that you are quite wrong. He did what needed to be done and I really don't see the relevance in your earlier post by saying one of the deciding members was pregnant at the time. Are you trying to say the process was unfair because a woman was in the room? I would hope not. The person in question is nothing but loyal to BG athletics and all of BG's athletes.
This last part I will just chalk up to bitterness on the topic and leave it at that. And of course i cant expect someone who believes that the bg mens singing team is "america's finest singing machine" to understand how layered this issue is.

Wow you can take such simple comments out of contex. PGY has a grasp on what I am saying and responded with maturity, thank you. I will respond to the pregnant comment. If she were to disagree with krebs on the issue there is a good chance he would find another "yes man" to do his bidding.
And yes i would have liked to find out earier in the year and yes I would have liked our coaches to tell us.

And with that dumbass remark, I quit reading.reyray82 wrote:...one of which was quite pregnant at the time).
Note to reyray82: If you make it personal, you lose your credibility. With a douchebag comment like that, you owe Janna Blais an apology.
