BG outhit NIU 12-4. Berry is looking like a horse and beginning to establish himself as the ace of the staff, which is incredible considering he was a full-time position player just last year at Longwood University and saw the mound only once!

I understand the specialization aspect of college baseball isn't like it is in the pros, as I was reminded a few years ago watching John Van Benschoten, but that kind of versitality at the Division I level is still extremely impressive in my book.

I am excited because I am coming to BG next weekend and plan on catching Saturday Afternoon's game with the Chippy's...Can't wait to see this team, as they seem to have improved from last year.

Agreed. Speaking of Van Benschoten, the Pirates dropped the ball with him. Just like almost all of their first round picks. He will be starting the season in Indy. He looked good in AAA, but looked horrible when the Pirates called him up. He also looks like he forgot how to swing a bat.

Indianapolis will have three MAC players again playing key roles. Two were first round pikcs, Bullington and Van Benschoten and Bixler at short.

So pulling a Rick Ankiel at this stage is out of the question?

It's too bad for Pittsburg because he was definitely a freak of nature coming out of college.

The Pirates have so many pitchers in their system, but need bats. I like your Ankiel comparison. Why not? The old regime with the Pirates were not very competent to be nice. Hopefully this new group dosen't ruin their players by rushing them to the majors.
