Softball really struggling to score and win games...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

:(

BG has dropped 8 in a row after losing to Miami 7-1 today. The Falcons have been outscored 25-4 over the last 4 games, all home losses (Ball State and Miami).

BG is 7-22, 2-8 MAC and will travel to East Lansing and a game with Sparty Tuesday...and then come home for 10 straight against MAC East teams and Wright State.

If BG is gonna get back in the MAC East race, it has to start now. Kent State won today and, I believe, is 8-1 MAC. Pretty tall order at the moment....

Errors really killed the team this weekend vs Miami, three straight errors Saturday allowed Miami to score its only run and yesterday's game featured 7 errors. We also just couldn't get people home when they were on base, I lost count from yesterday's but Saturday we left runners in scoring position 4 of the 7 innings. Gotta get things going this weekend vs Akron and Ohio

I'm going to comment on the softball team's problems simply from a analysis of the season stats and not from seeing any games. However, both baseball and softball makes it much easier to do this than other sports. You are entirely correct that errors are killing this team and not just last weekend. The team has committed 78 errors to the opponets 25. BG has given up nearly 60 more unearned runs than the opposition for the season. Only one Falcon has a better fielding percentage than that of the average percentage of our opponets. But the pitching, particularly the #2 and #3 starters, has been hit hard. Weimer has tried to pickup the slack but has been burdened by the errors and ineffective relief. Actually, the team is hitting somewhat better than 2008 but that team started off real badly in that department and likely was stronger at mid-season. All in all, the team needs better fielding and backup pitching to reverse the trend. In addition, a good pitcher or two will be needed for 2010 since Weimer will graduate. It doesn't look rosy at present.

I agree with your assesment when it comes the errors and the pitching situation after Weimer. As for the hitting, the hitting has been there, I did notice that, I mean the weekend before at NIU and WMU I know we had a bunch of hits, just this past weekend the hitting wasn't coming when we didn't it most, with runners in scoring position, we would get them there and just couldn't get them across the plate
