Per this Detroit Free Press article, Joyce went to Toledo Central Catholic and pitched for the Falcons in the mid-70s.
The class with which he handled his blown call that cost Galarraga a perfect game has been been truly amazing. I now know why the man handles himself so well; BG Breeding!

I think he's owned up very well to this mistake...and I gotta give credit to the pitcher. He had every right to be upset that close to a perfect game and yet he just smiled and went back to the mound. That was very impressive.
It sucks it happened but in the grand scheme of things, there's much worse happening in the world.

That was a great article. Thanks for posting it. I hadn't heard that he was a BG alum. What an incredible person. I saw a morning show interview with Galarraga and he also handled himself with class!! What a great lesson from both of them for many of today's self-centered youth and their parents!!!

It was very refreshing to witness the grace and professionalism of Galarraga and Joyce in the aftermath of the "The Call". There are so many examples of ego-mania in professional sports.

I thought the first baseman should have let the second baseman field the ball. He moved too far left and delayed throwing the ball.
Hard to knock the umpire for a split second decision, I think the first baseman cost him the perfecto.

I've heard other people argue this, but look at it this way: If he didn't go for the ball and decided to let the second baseman get it, what if the second baseman didn't get to it either? They were one out away from a perfect game, so they were doing their best to make sure they got the outs.
