Some of GC's budget cuts and scholarship cuts are beginning to show. Just wait, because ALL of the non revenue sports will be there soon, and the revenue sports seem to already be there!

I've said it before that you can gleam a lot about a team simply by looking at the cummulative stats in both baseball and softball. I've only seen this team play against Michigan, a game that they looked scrappy, played good D, made the pitches that were needed in tight situations, but were hampered by really having very few threats in the offensive lineup. This team also played a rather challenging schedule in the Spring but also fell flat against a bad Buffalo team at home as well as it's other MAC rivals. The team has shored up a porous defense from two years ago and has limited the oppponents' steals. That's the good news from a statistical point. The bad, the offense and pitching have deteriorated. Hannah Fulk is currently the only hitter above .300. There are 4 others batting .250 or beller with the remainder of the lineup all below the Mendoza line. The bench is hitting an unbelievable .016 or 1 for 61. To make matters worse they only have two walks or an OBP of .048. That is a lot of outs. As a team the ladies are hitting only .207 while opponents go at .323. OBP shows a similar disparity at .255 for the Falcons and .418 for opponents. The Falcons ERA is 5.20 which will win few softball games while opponent ERA is 1.75. WHIP which shows the number of batters on base per inning is nearly 2 for Falcons and slightly under 1 for opponents. Put these factors all together and the record is obvious. I particularly wonder about pitching as our most recent recruits have had a difficult adjustment to college ball.

I don't know a ton about the situation, but I assume that when the money crunch hit the University, GC was told to make budget cuts in his area, just as leaders of other departments on campus were told to do. You (factman) seem to be unhappy with most, if not all of GC's decisions -- what should he be doing differently?
This isn't a smart-aleck response, I'm actually wondering what other choices he had when the budget was cut. Other than taking some $$$ from each sport, the only other alternative I can think of is dropping sports, and I'm told that he didn't want to do that.

You hit it right on the nose.....take it across the board from ALL sports, and not just the ones he selects! One scholarship from football does not have near the effect, as taking one from softball or baseball, and in many cases, he is takling multiple scholarships from some of the sports that have very few to begin with. We will simply not be competitive in these sports in a short time, and this is not to mention the budget cuts he has put on the"chosen" ones! Maybe he should think about cuts in administration salaries and budgets, because we sure aren't getting our money's worth.

It's time to get a new AD...he's had enough time to show he knows what he is doing...we're worse in almost every sport since he got here. The only two teams that are in good shape are led by coaches who he didn't hire. I've heard from several people that the fun atmosphere that used to exist around athletics is gone....in any job you do, if it isn't somewhat enjoyable it is nearly impossible to be successful. People say wins and losses aren't part of an AD's job, I would argue the opposite. Creating a culture of winning within your department is the number 1 job after graduating your student athletes...we are going to finish LAST in the Reeve and Jacoby Cups AGAIN! How is this acceptable?

You NAILED it! I know a lot of people that used to work in the athletic department (I've been around a long time) and a some that still do, and all I hear is about how horrible the work atmosphere and "esprit de corp" are in the department, and this includes people across the board from maintenance and , secretaries thru administrators, both current and past, successful and not so successful. It really is time for a change NOW!!!!!!!!!!
President Cartwright could become a hero in many peoples eyes and probably the new president, with a nice parting gift of letting him GO before she does!

If this, in fact, is true...a change is definitely needed. Being over 2 hours away from BG, I don't get to hear the day to day operations and what is going on in the AD. BUT, most of our teams had, or will have, losing records on the fields and courts this school year. I looked up each sport and their record in the 2010-11 school year and it isn't pretty at all.

It's not getting any better for Softball...lost to WMU yesterday 7-0 to fall to 7-26, 1-11 MAC. The program has really fallen off compared to 5 or 6 years ago. BG will play WMU again today. The Falcons did sweep Detroit earlier this week.
GO BEEG

Softball ended the season on a high note, winning 5 of the last 6. BG over Akron 7-3 Sunday on SR Day. BG finished 12-32, 6-15 MAC. Yuk.

Can't understand how the coach still has a job. Was she hired by GC?

A good way to end a rough season, but I still think a change should be made
