Wottle had a lot of pure speed- he was afraid he'd fallen too far off the pace early but had plenty left for the sprint finish. Cut it awfully close, though. He was a senior when I was a freshman and I only ran against him once, in a cross country race. This was before Christopher gutted the BG non-revs and ruined the athletic department causing athletic supporters like factman to call for his head. :-D

Had to be one of Mel Brodt's proudest moments.

Heard a story from one of Dave's BG teammates. BG needed to win the mile relay to move up in a meet. Wottle accepted the baton 10 yards in back of the lead runner who was from WMU. DW finished five yards ahead of the second place finisher.

Wottle would have been a very good collegiate quarter miler. He probably could run a decent 100 meters-well, 100 yard dash back then. Brodt's nadir was probably recruiting me.
