BGSU Women's Soccer

Another humiliating season for BG women's soccer who went 0-15-2. They were one of just two D1 programs in the country that went without a win all season....Grambling State (0-7-2) were the other. Six student-athletes quit DURING season with several more to follow suit. This program has been killed by our previous AD and current SWA, Irvine. They got rid of a three-time MAC winning coach, and have gone 1-32-3 since then. Talk about a bad decision!

The good news is that he is GONE! We have one or two more of his lieutenants to get rid of, and the department will be in good shape again.

This is the first year for the new coach, let's not burn her at the steak yet. If you look at the teams record from 2009 through 2012 you will see 16 wins. Each season is roughly 20 games. That's a winning percentage of between 20 and 25% per season. If we paid as much attention to Women's Soccer as we do with other sports there would have been calls for Andy Richard's head in 2010 or 2011. 0 wins is not acceptable in any sport. However, I am reading in the Men's Basketball forum about how the first season our new coach has will be terrible. If we are already lowering expectations for a coach that has yet to be named maybe we can cut coach Basalyga some slack and let her get some recruits in and a system in place.
Just a thought...

I am sure SWA Irvine is one of the people you are referring to as one of his lieutenants but who is the other?

I think you mean stake....
If zero wins and 25% of the team quitting during season doesn't concern you then you are clearly not invested in the program, or it's success.
Let's not forget there was only one win last fall, when the rebuilding of 2010 and 2011 had its momentum halted.

1. Yes I did mean stake. I must have been hungry when I typed this... mmm...steak......
2. Where did I say zero wins and losing that many players did not concern me? That is a concern, but not an outlier when a new coach comes in with a new way of doing things.
3. I think the reason we have a new coach is because rebuilding was necessary in 2010 and 2011.
Again, I would say we do not control when coaches are let go, and who replaces them. We do control how that new coach is treated.

I saw some good things out there this year that give me a feel that the ladies will fare better next year.
They were in most games throughout the season losing most by one goal. They had a number of overtime games.
They also had a large amount of freshmen and we know the best thing about freshmen is....that next year they will be sophomores.
Yes, there is a lot of work yet to be done with this squad. But I think there is a foundation there. The seven seniors that stayed with the squad throughout the turmoil of playing for three coaches in four years hopefully showed the rest of the squad that perseverance can pay off. We need to look at the rising seniors to continue to provide leadership to our younger players and we need to look at our rising sophomores to help the incoming freshmen adjust to the college game.
This team needs to learn how to win. And one way to win games is to take the shot. We were outshot by our opponents 3-4-5 times more than we took in most games. Take more shots and you will eventually score more goals. Score more goals and you can win more games.
We had a great goalie in Lauren Cadel (and Jenna DiTusa did a nice job the final two games). I would have liked to have seen more of Haley Malaczewski (the BCSN guys spoke highly of her). But I do not see practice to know how they perform when the spotlight is off.
I can understand your frustration BGsocdad, especially if your daughter was a senior or a junior. But I hope you will advise her to continue to support her teammates. It is a new regime with Coach Basalyga and AD Kingston. Rome wasn't built in a day and it might take some time for this squad to overcome some of the past mistakes.

My complaint is not with the current coach but the administration. They caused this mess with their poor decisions and lack of support. The 2010 and 2011 seasons were not good, but they were also part of a rebuilding process. Every program has that cycle especially at the mid-major level and you only have to look at the rise and fall of other similar programs for proof of that. Richards had two below average years in 12 and the administration didn't support him during the times he needed them the most. He won three MAC Championships and competed in the post-season championship game on three other occasions. Add two NCAA tournament appearances and you can see he led the program to levels above all others at BGSU except women's basketball. There are a few people on here who refuse to recognize those achievements and don't value a good coach and a great guy.

I am not sure if the comments above were directed at me but I have tons of respect for what Coach Richards did for BGSU Women's soccer. He built the program from scratch. That should never be disregarded. I am not sure why there is a complaint against the administration. As transfer pointed out, the current AD has not been on the job for a year yet. Sure there is carryover in administrative staff, but Kingston is not Christopher. Please don't hang the current AD with the decision of the past AD. From what I have heard from inside the program there is a night and day difference between the two.
