I've usually started some baseball threads by now but that Spring trip was a killer. This team may again be looking at a really poor record; it largely depends on how the youth on the pitching staff develops. I think there's talent in that group, but it may take half a year or so for it to emerge. I just hope it does (emerge).

Given what's happening in our world currently you can almost guarantee more cuts in scholarships to Baseball. Worst case scenario would no more Baseball at BGSU.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that....it would be nice to see BG make intelligent decisions. Baseball has been screwed enough.

Let’s be honest. If some sports need to be eliminated, they will cut men’s sports that have little to no revenue, little to no following, and significant costs. Baseball, golf, and Cross Country will all be considered. After that, women’s sports like tennis and gymnastics will be considered.

They may limit the support to women's sports and make some scholarship cuts, but I don't think the optics would allow them to eliminate them.

I believe the NCAA mandates a minimum of 16 sports to remain D-1 and a vote to lower that recently, FAILED. BG currently has 17 spirts if I counted correctly.

Good question. I created a baseball scholarship two years ago and it had been paying out, already. I invested a lot of money into seeding it initially, and there were plans for money from my estate going to it as well.

While I understand the economics involved in making this decision, I obviously believe it's a mistake and don't agree with the action.

I'm also VERY disappointed that I wasn't given the courtesy of at least a phone call or email heads-up that this was even on the table. That's treating a good donor and alum in a pretty crappy way.

I created this scholarship very specifically to honor my late husband...so it has more than the usual meaning to someone who donates to something like this.

To see this happen, in this way, hurts like hell.

As someone who works in higher ed fundraising, I would have definitely pushed to let the more substantial donors to the program know before it was announced, but I'm not surprised. They probably had a deadline on what to cut, and they wanted to make sure that rumors about programs didn't get out before a final decision was made. However, now that it has been announced, if someone in development doesn't call you in the next couple of days, I'd be pretty upset with their stewardship.

On another note, Akron cut it's program in 2015, and now it's back (though at the worst possible time) with Chris Sabo as head coach. They might have a plan to bring it back as part of a 3-5 year plan if they raise enough money, but they can't externally commit to that at this point.
