While I was designing the BG News sports page at work tonight, I was reading some articles about the cross country teams. Both men's and women's CC have some pretty big rosters and a lot of depth. I know the men didn't end the season on a high note last year but I think they could suprise some people this year. The ladies lost Amber Culp which will hurt them but they have good leadership and some great runners. It's not really a big sport, but if the teams start winning, that's just two more BG teams tearing up the competition!
EDIT...here is the link to article I mentioned above

Can't compete
The men's team will always have a hard time in the MAC until they get track and field back. For some reason, the Toledo men's cross country and distance is better now that they don't have track than when they did.
As for the women, it will be an interesting early season match-up on September 3 as BG hosts Toledo in a dual meet. Last year they tied, but Toledo held out their top-5 or so. The Falcons used to dominate women's cross country in the MAC and Toledo was a joke. Now, Toledo dominates the MAC and has not lost to BG since about '98.
Why is that?

I can't decide whether I agree or disagree with that comment. Yes they lack actual meet experience but they still run and practice everyday. Cami Wells is a great coach and she most likely pushes them pretty hard. The men's team will always have a hard time in the MAC until they get track and field back.

Here's a minor vent...
I sent a letter in to The BG News a few years back. I included all the contact information, of course, but didn't hear anything. I ended up calling and the response was, Oh, you want that published? Um, yeah. They ran it, but anonymously! My head almost exploded!
Anyway, looks like the News is doing well these days. The last thing they need is an old fart muddying up the works!

The problem with having a XC team and no track team is it is hard as hell to recruit the best runners. If you are one of the bext runners in XC coming out of high school the odds are you are also very good at either the 800, 1600, 3200, or a combination of all three in track. I know if that were the case for me I would be going somewhere where I could do both. If you are great in XC and track there is no reason to pick BGSU. And most people who are very good in XC are also all state in track.McMetz811 wrote:I can't decide whether I agree or disagree with that comment. AS A CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD COACH FOR MANY YEARS, I CAN TELL YOU THAT MOST DISTANCE RUNNERS WOULD NOT CHOOSE A SCHOOL THAT OFFERS ONLY X-COUNTRY. DISTANCE COMPETITION IS A YEAR-LONG ACTIVITY ----- AND ASIDE FROM CLUB OPPORTUNITIES, THERE ISN'T MUCH (OUTSIDE OF X-COUNTRY) THAT A DISTANCE RUNNER COULD DO AT A SCHOOL THAT DOES NOT OFFER A TRACK AND FIELD OPPORTUNITY. ---- IT'S A SHAME THAT BG AND UT FOUND THE NEED TO LET MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD SLIP THROUGH THE CRACKS. COMBINING BOTH GIRLS AND BOYS TEAMS AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL, IT'S THE SECOND MOST POPULAR SPORT IN THE COUNTRY. ---- i WONDER WHY BASEBALL IS NEVER DROPPED, OR DOES THAT HAVE SACRED COW STATUS.
Coach Tucker is one heck of a CC and track coach. I ran under him in HS, no matter who he graduates there always seems to be another young runner developing under him. Ahh to go back to the days of running fire hydrants, flags, and Indian runsMaybe they should include the BGHS ladies in that meet. Before you laugh, look at their times!!!!
