What sports would you like to see added?
Currently, there's 11 women's teams to 7 men's. Assuming that women were given another sport (Hockey seems to be an up and coming one), what sport would you like to see added for men. Or, feel free to just say what sport you think BG should add.
Personally, there's no reason for us to not have a men's track team or wrestling (other than Title IX).

Men's track would be the smart move if they were to add a sport, seeing as they have CC but can't get too many good recruits. Although, I did hear we had some decent guys coming in. After that though, I'd LOVE to see a wrestling team at BGSU. BG would do well, there is a lot of wrestling talent in Ohio.

If we were to bring back old sports, I would be split between T/F and Tennis, both were pretty decent programs. Swimming was consistently finishing in the bottom half of the MAC, and would probably be the toughest to get back up.
But, If BG were to add a new sport, I like the idea of rugby. Unless things have really dropped off since I was at BG, the A team was pretty good. Competed very well against other top schools and overseas. Everything is/was there and they could really compete.

Lets quit blaming everything on Title IX
What does Title IX have to do with whether we offer these two programs? We've already dropped the track and field program due to an enormous budget deficit in the Atheltic Department. Will either of these two programs offer a positive economic impact to the department? Title IX has absolutely nothing to do with either of these two programs.BGDrew wrote:Personally, there's no reason for us to not have a men's track team or wrestling (other than Title IX).

I agree with Transfer in that poor budget management and lack of creativity are the reason we no longer offer the above mentioned sports.
People forget or don't know that Title IX has three prongs to it. They only look at the "Proportionality" prong and think that is solely Title IX. (I have included the THREE ways schools/institutions can comply with title ix). If you want to see a great example of how to run an athletic department without cutting ANY sports check out Maryland.
The Three Prong Test Of Title IX (schools can choose either one of the following to comply with the law)
(1) having the percentages of male and female athletes substantially proportionate to the percentage of male and female students enrolled at the college;
(2) having a history and continuing practice of expanding participation opportunities for the underrepresented sex (almost always women);
(3) "fully and effectively" accommodating the interests and abilities of the underrepresented sex.
All to often TItle IX gets collapsed into only the first prong or proportionality.

You beat me to it re: adding men's lacrosse....BG had a GREAT tradition in lacrosse years ago....would take a few years to get back into a truly competitive mode, but with Ohio lacrosse exploding at HS level, we wouldn't have to look totally at NY and MD for players anymore either. As a former lax coach, I'd love to see us add it back into the sports scene at BG.

'61,
No doubt. I work here at the University of Virginia where one of the top program's in the country resides. UVa won a couple national championships since I've been working here, including one as recent as two years ago, and the UVa women's team won one just last season. It's one of those sports that's bigger regionally than nationally. College lacrosse down here is like college hockey up there.

Women's Hockey needs to be added. We have a tradition of great men's hockey so if just makes sence to me to expand that to a tradition of overall hockey excellence. As far as adding a men's sport, I think track and field is the obvious choice. I know we had great lacross teams here, and I would love to see us add every sport possible but we can't. We already have the track, which I understand is getting re-surfaced in the near future, and it would compliment and help out men's cross country team. They both recruit for each other. Why bring up lacross which will only help that one sport in recruiting terms when you can bring up a sport that will help recruiting efforts in two sports. That seems to be the smart move to me.
