Some interesting MAC baseball stats

Post by factman »

Bowling Green is leading the league in hitting, third in pitching and third in fielding. When you are that high in all of those categories and 5-4, I guess it means thing just haven't fallen your way so far, but in baseball, those have a way of evening out over the course of the whole season.

Wow...top 3 in all categories. I see Ball State finally lost a MAC game to Akron this past weekend...the Cards are 8-1 MAC.

Time for things to go our way in the MAC! BEAT ND first!

I learned a new word today. Sabermetrics is the study of what?

Hint: It pertains to the thread I posted this in.

First off, I cheated and went to google.com...
Sabermetrics is the mathematical and statistical analysis of baseball records. Is there one for football? :D

I don't know if there is a corresponding word for football. I'll check sometime. Sabermetrics can also be written as SABRmetrics, which stands for Society of American Baseball Research + metrics.

Bill James is the god of sabermetrics. Have you ever read any of his books? Definitely worth checking out.
Billy Beane of the A's, Shapiro of the Tribe, DePodesta in LA, Riccardi in Toronto are all GM's who rely heavily on these formulas when making their moves.
If you haven't read "Moneyball" yet, it's a good way to learn more about the process.
My 2 cents...

I have not read any of his books. I did however run across this. Apparently, BG has it's own sabermetrics guru in house. His name is Jim Alberts and he is a professor of mathematics and statistics there.

Albert, J. (1994), "`Exploring baseball hitting data: what about those breakdown statistics?", Journal of the American Statistical Association , 89, 1066-1074.
