OSU or BGSU?

Talk about the Buckeyes the Wolverines the Hilltoppers the Ducks the Beavers the Chanticleers... or anyone else who isn't BG or an opponent in this forum.

OSU or BGSU?

Post by LakelandRocket »

My nephew graduates from Miami U in the spring, in History / Poly Sci, etc. from the Honors College.

He has an offer to do an assistantship at BGSU aor OSU and must make a decision by Friday.

The offers are similar but OSU is not offering room and board.

I dislike OSU and hope that he chooses BGSU. His dad tells him that OSU will open more doors.

Any insight?

He would also me put in charge of managing Greek affairs at BG.

Help!

OSU will open more doors...its is nationally recognized. nobody outside of the midwest is going to know who BGSU is..they will think it is an elementary school lol

Tell him to do what's best for him in the short term and long term. Room and board is extremely expensive at schools (nearly $5,000/semester). In the end though, just do what's best for him.

It is nationally recognized but I don't think it's well respected outside of Oklahoma. I think Oklahoma has a much better academic reputation if you're going to be in that state one way or another.

Pay no mind to the man behind the red and gray curtain.

Seriously though - I'm not sure I can give an un-biased opinion, but obviously I'd have to say go with BG. I have known quite a few people who have been given similar opportunities here and have said they've learned a lot and the experience has opened many new doors for them.

If the assistantship is in any way related to interaction with students, I'd strongly recommend BG. Because of the smaller size there will be much more one-on-one interaction than there would be at OSU, and that is valuable no matter how you look at it.

One of the community secretaries (not quite the same thing, but still) for one of the learning communities here on campus just moved schools to a slightly bigger school and has told me many times that she regrets it because she hardly ever gets to interact with the students and that was what she loved most about her job.

OSU has size and considerable name recognition, but it doesn't have anywhere near the same personal connection. BG has plenty of name recognition (despite what some people on here may try to tell you.) Our nationally renowned programs speak for themselves, and the fact that our school's name has been plastered all over ESPN for the last few weeks certainly isn't hurting anything.

As has already been said, it's a personal choice and he has to go with what works best and what feels best. Room and board is expensive and (in my opinion) you can't beat the BG community, but if OSU just feels like a better fit, then it is what it is.

My wife graduated from Illinois State University and interviewed with schools who were considering candidates from bigger schools like OSU. She got the job over these candidates. It was one of 4 schools who made an offer to her. All of them said the name of the schools did not matter. What matters most is what you do while you are in your program. So he needs to think about his lng term goals and pick the program that aligns with those goals. Then bust ass for however long the program is.

Thanks Guys,

I'll let you know how it shakes out.

I personally think that the free room and board allows more time for studying, and less time messing with leases, roommates., cooking etc. Plus BG has better looking, or more plentiful ;) women.

He was also told that he would do more teaching at BG and more admin at OSU. I think that he already knows how to use a Xerox machine, put I'm pretty sure that OSU is lacking qualified personnel.

What type of assistantship is it Lakeland? Academic or student affairs oriented?
