I received the following from a friend at VT, and I apologize if this has been placed elsewhere.
"VT family members across the country have united to declare this Friday
April 20th, an "Orange and Maroon Effect" day to honor those killed in the
tragic events on campus Monday, and to show support for VT student, faculty,
administrators, staff, alumni, and friends. "Orange and Maroon Effect" was
born several years ago as an invitation to Tech Fans to wear orange and
maroon to VT athletic events. We invite everyone from all over the country
to be a part of the VT family this Friday. To wear orange and maroon to
support the families of those who were lost, and to support the school and
community we all love so much."
R.I.P Those who were killed...as what I have seen several places, This week we are all Hokies.

Hmmm... I'll have to see if I have anything orange.
Also, I have been working with a few other bloggers about changing the color scheme on our sites to maroon and orange for Monday (one week after the BS that went down at VT). Maybe we hustle that up and do it Friday-Monday instead.
If any of ya have a blog and want to join in, PM me, I think we're going to include an ad/link to the memorial fund while we do it.

This is going to piss a lot of people off, but no thank you.
It's disgusting how much the media has pushed this issue with 24-hour coverage. Do you think that those in VT really want to see the killer's face plastered on the evening news right now? The best way to deal with mourning is to allow those who have been affected have their own time to reflect and not have these sort of things thrown at them everytime someone says "Hokie."
I do have to ask why the soldiers in Iraq who are brought back dead don't receive this kind of press coverage and stories about their courage and honor?
The media sucks in this country.

I agree with everything else you said, but I think the distinct difference here in terms of perception (be it right or wrong) is that soldiers are expected, and in fact expect themselves, to die in battle. 18-23 year-olds are not expected to die in a learning environment.BGDrew wrote:

And the frank truth is that people would turn off the TV if there was nothing but that on for the duration of the war. This is new and shocking. People crave more information. The war is not, and it isn't popular right now.Bleeding Orange wrote:I agree with everything else you said, but I think the distinct difference here in terms of perception (be it right or wrong) is that soldiers are expected, and in fact expect themselves, to die in battle. 18-23 year-olds are not expected to die in a learning environment.BGDrew wrote:

God bless our troops, but it is foolish to compare them to the victims at VTech.

I am just heart broken for the familiesand friends of the people gunned down. They were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. I pray that God will comfort all affiliated with Va Tech and give them strength and hope in such a dark time.
s**t like this isn't supposed to happen, but it does.
As far as Cho? He was a gutless turd. If you wanna end your own life, go ahead. But DO NOT take a bunch of innocent people with you. I can't tell you how angry I get when hearing or reading of some idiot shooting up a place and then turning the gun on himself. FREAKIN GUTLESS. Coward. He should have not been on the streets anyway. The dude was sick and possessed by evil. Period.
I feel so badly for those families...it really can happen anywhere. I am so sorry.

I'm not even all that sentimental about the situation, and the media has pissed me off on this at every turn. But still, every time I think about it and blow it off, I wonder what it would be like if it were BG and all the buildings that get thrown out as nothing more than a timeline had a "personality" to them. I've made any number of jokes about this horrible situation, (This is, after all, the first time Virginia Tech has shot on themselves since last year's hoops game with BG.
) but to say the victims and their friends and families don't deserve our thoughts because the media is filled with douchebags is kinda silly.

I totally agree. Choose to wears the colors or not, it's up to you, don't don't make your decision based upon the media. Make your decisions based upon whether or not you choose to support the victims.TG1996 wrote:I'm not even all that sentimental about the situation, and the media has pissed me off on this at every turn. I'm disgusted by all of the media coverage too, especially surrounding this whack job and the package that he sent to NBC. The focus should be on the VT community and what we can do to help them heal. Like others have said, the media sucking shouldn't be a reason for you to not support those affected.
I feel horrible about what has happened, and I wish that there was more I could do for them. If wearing orange today to show my support is what the VT community is asking for, then I will absolutely do that.
