I definitely don't like this paying idea. It's most analagous to a graduate assistant position. For my research assistant position, my tuition was waived and I received a healthy monthly stipend. I was an employee of Purdue University. For athletes to get the same sort of deal, they would be considered employees, thus negating their statuses as amateur athletes. In essence, the proposal would make Big Ten and other conference athletes into professional athletes, not student amateur athletes. Big difference there.

Makes you wonder if the players also got the benefit of homework done or tests taken for them?

I would think that would be a given....

Wow. I thought he was going to to try to ride this out. I guess this move was to avoid complete embarrassment and to see if they can get the NCAA to back off a little bit with the upcoming shellacking they will be delivering.

And is anyone shocked that they waited for a Holiday to announce this? Probably had this ready to go for weeks, but just waited for a time when fewer people would be paying attention to the sports news.

And that is very, very classless. Today is a day for remembering those who died in the military, and they use that as a way to try to blend Tressel's "resignation" into the noise. 100% classless. Wait, didn't Tressel wear camo at the spring game to honor the military??

When I first heard this, I thought that there HAS to be a reason he resigned at this time, after making such a fuss about NOT resigning. Any idea what the new allegations were going to be????

And I also agree that this was total crap to announce it TODAY. COMPLETE AND TOTAL BS!!!

The reporter working in the story for SI tweeted that it will be up online later today and that once it's out there the timing of Tressel's departure will make sense.

Dispatch is also reporting that there's an individual investigation regarding Pryor underway, and he may be ineligible for this next year beyond his current 5 game suspension. Too bad, because I thought it would have been pretty funny to have seen him enter the field in Columbus to a chorus of boos.
