When you are an Ohio State fan and you pledge your allegiance to a school that goes after questionable kids and has had a good amount of NCAA problems, these are the types of things you have to put up with, fair or not.
If you don't want people giving you s#1t about OSU and former OSU players having run-ins with Johnny Law and the NCAA, become a Mount Union fan. You can't have it both ways.

And I stated at the time I was nowhere near happy about that.BGfootballfan wrote:Don't hate on OSU, we still took Nick Lawrence, and he screwed up in High School more than Clarett could of dreamed of.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:OSU and OSU fans can cry me a river about Clarett. BG has never had an NCAA violation in football. I can hate on OSU or anybody else I want to
Roll Along!
For a year or two leading up to, and obviously through the 2002 season, many (most?) OSU fans rode Mo's jock to a title. They loved him. He could do no wrong. Even when he did wrong, he was still a victim somehow. Failing classes, taking cars, it was all someone else's fault, and as long as Mo could get back on the field the next fall, everything would be okay.
Then, at some point, they stopped supporting him, and tried to get away with not claiming him at all. I just don't think you can do that. Sure, as a fan, you're expected to pull for the guy that's winning you games, maybe turn a blind eye to a *few* rough edges, but you can't pick and choose when someone should stop being associated with your team's name and "flip the switch" quite that easily.

I'll allow all OSU fans and the university to pretend Clarett never existed.......right after they give back the Title he won for them.
Roll Along!
I've gotten into this argument on the Browns board and everyone says I'm a moron because I do attach some blame on Jim Tressel & OSU for what Clarett has become. It was probably too late by the time they got ahold of him, but the fact is they did nothing to change the pattern of behavior that has made Clarett into what he is today.
The kid was a headcase in HS who was granted everything he ever wanted because he could carry a football. His parents didn't discipline him & the schools certainly weren't going to, cuz he'd transfer to another HS (as he did once). OSU rewarded that behavior by giving him a scholarship.
This immature headcase then is given a job that he was talented enough to hold, but not stable enough to deal with: Starting RB. But he was good...he was damn good. He continued to run well and he became a star. Then we start to see his immaturity surface some more with him blowing up at his coaches. He didn't get punished for even one quarter for his immaturity on the sidelines. He continues to run. Then he shows even more immaturity the week leading up to the bowl game. Did he miss even one play as a punishment? Nope.
I'm sorry, but Jim Tressel is not above criticism in this situation. Sure it's 75% MoC himself, and probably 15-20% bad parenting, but the remainder should be divvied up evenly between Tressel, his HS coaches, and all other authority figures around him. The guy was NEVER taught the difference between right & wrong, and hell even the Denver Broncos tried to perpetuate that behavior by rewarding him as a 3rd rounder after he was a nationally publicised head case.
MoC deserves most of the blame for what his life has become, but there is no way that those around him can say they are not at fault. Clearly they have all screwed up, because they were so blinded by his talent.

he could have been treated differently, looking back some people probably would but there is no way of predicting a persons future. You can not blame OSU, his HS coach, the Broncos etc. There is no way of knowing.
The kid needs help, serious mental help. He is responsible for his own actions but he needs better people to give him better advice now that he is on his own.
Yes it is unfortunate that the media still ties Clarret to OSU (for us OSU fans anyways) but thats the way it is. OSU has a new AD, things have been cleaning up. They are getting classier kids and punishing those who are not.
OSU does not owe anyone a title back. Clarrett was one man on the championship team. The defense won that championship. Clarret was one man on the train along for the ride. to say he won them the title is bogus. he helped he did not do it all by himself.

it is also not true that people made excuses for him the first time he got in trouble.
these kids come into OSU and the fans dont know much about them, their backgrounds off the field. So of course OSU fans loved the kid, he was tough helping win football games and it seemed he was staying out of trouble.
when he got in trouble people turned on him pretty fast. then they suspended him and then he left. Nobody made excuses for him. Most turned on him once they found out what he was really like.

I feel pretty bad for Maurice Clarett. It is pretty obvious that he has very serious problems that he needs a lot of help to fix. He has (had) so much talent to play a game that could have made his life much better and he has thrown it away. Whose fault is it? I think it's a combination of everyone involved in his life, but mainly his own. It is just too bad that he has gone down the path that he has travelled.
As for the Buckeye fans and local media throwing him under the bus, I think it is hilarious how many Buckeye fans want to wash their hands clean of this guy, but yet so many have that massive poster with a shot of him scoring the winning TD that celebrates the 2002 national championship victory. He's good enough to get people a national championship, but not good enough to receive support when he makes poor life decisions.

The prosecutor's office now says he was arrested near the home of a witness set to testify in the trial from his January robbery arrest.
Either a bizarre coincidence, or REALLY f'd up.
