There is no such thing as a Division 1-A (Division 1 FBS) national champion.

Don't think you are right- I believe the smaller schools had a playoff before the BCS, which as Drew notes, still doesn't provide an NCAA recognized national champion. That's why I said Syracuse was "named" national champ in 1959.

NCAA Div II & III began playoffs in 1973
Div I-AA now Div I FCS began in 1978
