The Board of Trustees hires and can fire a president. The governor can also ask for the resignation of the president, but college presidents do not answer to the governor.

One thing about this situation that I am wondering is "When will OSU release Tressell?"

I believe they are ultimately going to have to because he lied to the NCAA not once, but twice. He signed a statement in September 2010 saying he knew of no program violations (which he did know about) and again in December when the NCAA asked questions about tattoo-gate.

OSU may not have acted in terminating Tressell at this time because of Jim O'Brien. Remember that O'Brien admitted he gave a prospective recruit $16,000 for his family in another country. OSU immediately fired him for cause. O'Brien took the university to court and then won $2.5 million.

OSU learned something from that incident. So instead of dotting their T's and crossing their I's, they are going to wait for the NCAA to rule that Tressll committed a major infraction and then they can release him without having to pay him anything.

The fact of the matter is, this is not over.

He must face a suspension at least the same length as the players involved in the scandal.
He must face an additional suspension for withholding this information from the university.
He must face termination for lying to the NCAA TWICE.

OU and Eastern Michigan will be able to claim victory over the Buckeyes in 2010 and the record book will reflect their wins. OSU will have to forfeit games these players played in in 2010 and will have to return all of the Sugar Bowl money as well.

In the meantime, what the hell are they doing down there at OSU? If the Athletic Department can't get it across to the student-athletes what they can and can't do? And if their football coach has no idea as to who to contact when he receives something about possible infractions? Maybe the Athletic Director has failed and should be replaced.

Hey Transfer2BGSU, I totally agree with your statement. Wouldn't the Big 10 +1+1 have to return Sugar Bowl money as well? If so, that would get really ugly.

I think when schools have to vacate wins, it counts against their record but does not affect the opponents' records. That is, tOSU would be 0-13 for 2010, but the teams they beat would still show a loss to them.

I do like your points about Jim O'Brien. That very well may be at play here.

They vacate all victories. Then it is the like the games did not exist for one side. EMU or whoever will still show the game as a loss and the game basically didn't exist for OSU. It doesn't really make sense but that is my best interpretation. I am sure someone else can word that better than I could. I also could be incorrect, OSU might be 0-13. Either way it doesn't make sense because why should EMU be given a loss.

It looks like vacated wins just end up as meaningless asterisks in the history books, though I haven't found examples outside of this one article. (Mostly, because it's not worth the energy to research. :) )

I felt the same on the research thing. I found out one thing that basically backed up what I originally thought and that was good enough for me.

Transfer:

Great context & perspective, re: O'Brien.

I'll be a naysayer here and stick by my instincts. The Vest may get a stiffer punishment, but my gut says he'll be on the sideline by mid-season, coaching the Bucknuts and this whole thing will be just another minor speed bump for Zero State.

I hope I'm wrong. I'd love for Tressel to get what he deserves and for the university to be kicked in its collective pompous ass, but I have doubts.

The NCAA sat Dez Bryant for 10 games for lying about having lunch with Deion Sanders. How many games is lying twice about violations by your players worth?

I can't see this being a minor speed bump. They are going lose a lot of scholarships out of this. Ask USC or the Alabama teams of the 90's how bad it hurts. Plus his cloak of innocence is gone and he and the entire program are now in everybody's scope.

Knowingly playing ineligible players is a major offense. If there were ever a time for the NCAA to make an example of someone and to regain some MUCH needed credibility it is now.

Well, given the ineptitude and inequality of punishments issued by the NCAA, Tressel will probably get a raise by getting a share of the BCS Bowl pot and have the BCS championship trophy named in his honor.

From the MAC Board, here are the emails:
http://www2.nbc4i.com/mgmedia/file/127/ ... el-emails/

And a breakdown of the situation:
http://claytravis.net/wordpress/?p=1298
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."
~~USCHO Poster
"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

The comments are just ridiculous!!
"Amazing, coach, man, and leader for his kids and the entire state of Ohio."
Wow....words escape me with a comment like this....

I decided to send an email to the student, Grant Freking, that wrote that article in the Lantern. I figured it would be nice for him to get at least one positive email for that article. I copied the email below:
From: Jeremy A Joseph
Sent: Friday, March 11, 2011 07:13
To: [email protected]
Subject: Lantern Article, "Give Tressel the boot"

Grant,

When all of this started to unfold regarding Tressel's knowledge of the incident, I expected him to be slapped on the wrist. Not because that's what he deserved, but because that's what almost all OSU alumni and fans would want. Tell him he was a bad boy, send him to the corner for his timeout, and then ask for an apology, hugs, and kisses. I am relieved that there is somebody associated with Ohio State that is willing to stand-up and speak the truth; Tressel has lied for years and will continue to do so until he is properly punished. Your article strikes at the very heart of the matter: The Ohio State University is owned and led by the football coach, not the Board of Trustees or the President. Academics be damned; we must win a football title.

I realize you have probably been receiving many emails from your fellow students professing their "love of your article". Unfortunately, when a journalist writes a truthful article that ruffles some feathers, people automatically assume the journalist is "a hack", as was left in one of the comments online to your article. You, sir, are not a hack. You are a hero for writing the truth and standing for what you believe in. I, along with many people associated with Bowling Green State University, applaud your gallantry. Ohio State needs more people like you, not like Jim Tressel.

I was discussing this at work and a lady who is a huge OSU fan (unkown to me until that moment) got quite upset and stated (really, she said this) "All those other schools cheat, too-how else can OSU keep up?" She was not kidding.
