Would you hire Tressell as head coach here
Re: Would you hire Tressell as head coach here
Ohio State makes over $50 million each year from athletics, mostly from football. It is the most valuable college brand in the United States. Ohio State sells out and earns money because it's Ohio State, not because of Jim Tressel. Michigan has still had the largest turnouts in the world, even though their team has sucked for the last few years. It's the brand, NOT the coach. And don't tell me we'll pull a Boise State. BSU is one of 3 D1 programs in several hundred miles. We are one of 7 in the state. They are a major state school in their state capital.

Maybe we would not put out like Boise St....but you got my point. Its a step in the right direction. Why does everything have to be so damn literal around here.jg4242 wrote:Ohio State makes over $50 million each year from athletics, mostly from football. And you are right its the brand...so how do you create the brand? Whatever we are doing now isnt working.

I think the University of Texas at Austin is the brand in college athletics.

Actually, Ohio has 8 Div 1-A, or FBS, schools as well as YSU in FCS.jg4242 wrote:Ohio State makes over $50 million each year from athletics, mostly from football. I stand corrected, Freak. Globetrotter, we can't create that brand. And Flipper, you're right. In football terms, at least. But OSU has top ten revenue generators for both football AND men's basketball, according to Forbe's.

'The Vest' is not a brand?

The premise of this thread was a what if with Tressell.....he would be a brand creator right there.

Re: Would you hire Tressell as head coach here
The bulk of this conversation has centered on using the habitual liar Jim Tressel to build interest in the program...using a single person to draw interest to an institution isn't building a brand, it's building a cult.
I've hired people, taken jobs with and under people in a similar kind of a scenario...the situation or person has a ton of baggage...enough to make you really take a step back before going forward. I've done the whole "the past is past, let's move forward" bit and it has never..not ever...been worth it. The baggage has always been more than enough to make me regret it.

Re: Would you hire Tressell as head coach here
The biggest point I can offer here is that it wouldn't be about Bowling Green, it'd be about Jim Tressell at Bowling Green. Once Tressell inevitably left, Bowling Green would once again be just another mid-major in Northwest Ohio, with perhaps a footnote that Urban Meyer and Jim Tressell once coached there.
In other words, we might see a spike in interest for awhile, but my expectation would be that once the man who was the focal point left, the interest would go with him.

"Life Promises for Success: Promises from God on Achieving Your Best" was the title of JTs second book. What do you think those promises are?
1. We will get you free tattoos and cars if you play for OSU?
2. Lieing and Cheating are OK as long as you get what you want.

I was hassling an OSU fan at the office yesterday...I said Tressel told the NCAA "Everyone's doing it". SO the NCAA rep says "if everyone jumped off a bridge, would you do that too?" Tressel says "would that get us to a BCS game?"
