George Mason

Anyone see George Mason play on ESPN2 last night? Man, what a great looking team. Big, fast, athletic, a tremendous point guard...kinda makes you wonder.

George Mason looked great. They have a couple of ultra-quick guards and a Matt Futch-type down low, but with better hands and footwork.

They look like they will be going to another NCAA tournament. Like him or not but Coach Larranaga is doing a good job there. Wish he could of had the same kind of success here. Would you consider a move to George Mason a lateral move from Bowling Green? I really can't answer the question.

However, it might be easier to recruit to George Mason (DC area) than to BG. What are the facilities there compared to BG's? With no football or hockey maybe George Mason can allocate more of its athletic budget to basketball.

I took some graduate classes at GMU when I lived in DC in the early 90's. The campus is new and very nice. It is located in a very nice area of suburban DC in northern VA. They have a newer facility called the Patriot Center that seats around 10-12K. The enrollment at GMU is arount 12-14 K, last I checked.

Coach L was steeped in the east coast and had been a long time assistant to Terry Holland at UVA. Coach L is much more in his element at GMU, I'm sure.

I would think George Mason is a slight upgrade over BG. Better facility for basketball.

I need to look at his roster, but Coach L has always been a great recruiter. Has good connections in NYC, east coast. I remember loving to watch the half court trapping D that his teams played against opponents, especially at home. Does his teams at George Mason play the same up and down tempo, trapping D?

We seemed to have a ton of talent in 1992/1993 (at least around that time - the specific years are foggy due to the all the alcohol I consumed back then), but he didn't use it well. I think we went something like 9-1 in non-conference play to start the season 2 years in a row (including beating Michigan State both times). It was run-and-gun and fun to watch. We had visions of Sweet 16 appearances dancing in our heads. Then the MAC season started and our style of play seemed to resort back to a dull half-court style, lost games we shouldn't have lost, and ended up going to the NIT - once we got drilled by UC, the other year I think we lost in OT to Wisconsin. Very disappointing conclusions to seasons that had started out so promising.

Everyone I knew thought that all you had to do was roll the ball onto the floor and that team would have had more success than Larranaga did with that group, and that we would never make the NCAA tourney with him as coach. Turns out that was true, but the results haven't been much different subsequent to him.

It's frustrating to see him able to make the NCAA tourneys with George Mason while BG is stuck in the mud. Reminds me of seeing Art Modell win a Super Bowl while Cleveland continues to suffer.

As I alluded to earlier the lack of other div one sports is a big advantage to George Mason. If George Mason had a football and a hockey program would they be as successful as they are now?

What's the stat? BG is one of only 17ish schools with D1 football, men's/women's hoops and men's hockey.

17 seems like an awful high number, even.

BG, Michigan, Ohio State, Miami(OH), WMU, Boston College, Minnesota, Wisconsin, UCONN (is their hockey D1?), Army (see above), Notre Dame...

I guess that *is* 11 at 1am off the top of my head... maybe 17 is close to right.

Your last comment aside, which probably will give me nightmares for months on end and lead to me filing a civil suit against you for emotional damages, you did miss a couple of schools:

Michigan State and Alabama-Birmingham (believe it or not).

I've racked my brain and can't think of anyone else. It would be great to see schools like Maryland, Colorado, Northwestern, Buffalo and the like establish eventual DI hockey programs, but I don't think Title IX would allow that to happen anytime soon at this point, unfortunately. I have a feeling that a lot of these schools would love to establish hockey programs, but it really couldn't be done without establishing another women's program (preferably women's hockey), but that is a huge expense for any athletic department.

Oh, and Air Force. You forgot Air Force, too.

Additionally, yes, UConn does have DI hockey. If you recall, we kind of played in their holiday tournament this year? We kind of won it, too? Ring a bell, douchebag?
