OLEAN, N.Y. -- St. Bonaventure athletic director Ron Zwierlein, who took the job in 2004 after a men's basketball recruiting scandal led to NCAA sanctions, plans to retire in December.
The 62-year-old Zwierlein said Wednesday that he wants to spend more time with his family.
Zwierlein took over a program the NCAA said lacked institutional control after junior forward Jamil Terrell was ruled ineligible in February 2003 for failing to meet junior college transfer guidelines.
The team eventually boycotted its final two games of the season and the scandal led to the dismissal of coach Jan van Breda Kolff. Zwierlein replaced athletic director Gothard Lane.
Under coach Anthony Solomon, the Bonnies finished 8-19 record last season -- a six-win improvement over the previous season.
