COLUMBUS, Ohio - Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett tussled with police during a traffic stop early Wednesday before officers discovered four loaded guns in his sport utility vehicle, a police spokesman said.

Officers used Mace to subdue Clarett after a stun gun was ineffective because the suspect was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sgt. Michael Woods said.

"It took several officers to get him handcuffed," Woods said. "Even after he was placed in the paddy wagon, he was still kicking at the doors and being a problem for the officers."

Clarett, 22, is currently awaiting trial on two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of robbery and one count of carrying a concealed weapon in a separate case. Authorities said he was identified by witnesses as the person who flashed a gun and robbed two people in an alley behind the Opium Lounge in the early hours of Jan. 1.

Clarett scored the winning touchdown in the second overtime to lead Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, the school's first since 1968. But that was the last game the freshman played for Ohio State. He sat out the 2003 season after being charged with misdemeanor falsification on a police report, then dropped out of school. He sued to be included in the 2004 NFL draft and lost in court.

A surprise third-round pick in the 2005 draft, he was cut by the Denver Broncos during the preseason.

So, if he had played at Michigan and he was the best freshman in the country, you don't think this would be news? This is news because he was a hell of a football player at a high profile school and has screwed his life up. If he went to any major football school, you would be hearing about this today.

My point is that it sucks for OSU because they have dried their hands of this guy. It isn't even like he graduated from OSU. Plus, when a guy who is in the NFL now gets arrested (see the Bengals), the report says "Cincinnati Bengal, XXX, was arrested last night". You don't hear, "Former (insert college here) was arrested last night". With this f-ing idiot, he is only attached to OSU because he has screwed his life up so bad and has not gone on to do anything with it.

OSU and OSU fans can cry me a river about Clarett. When you're OSU and you take a chance on a kid you downright know is questionable, these are the possible consequences.

When you are an Ohio State fan and you pledge your allegiance to a school that goes after questionable kids and has had a good amount of NCAA problems, these are the types of things you have to put up with, fair or not.

If you don't want people giving you s#1t about OSU and former OSU players having run-ins with Johnny Law and the NCAA, become a Mount Union fan. You can't have it both ways.

I don't disagree with that. The point is when he was at OSU, they suffered the consequences of a player's actions. But for god's sake, he hasn't been at OSU for more than 3 years. I am just saying that when most athletes move on to the NFL, they are more associated with their NFL team than their college team. I should have never responded to this thread because OSU haters are sometimes less rational than OSU fans.

That's very true -- and you're right, it's probably because he got in trouble at OSU and then never played a down in the NFL so OSU is everyone's only memory of him.

I think a big part of it is that a few schools have bad reputations like OSU, Miami, FSU, Va tech etc. So when a player from one of those schools gets in trouble, everyone links it back to the college. I still remember Peter Warrick for Shoplifting, and if Marcus Vick shot a cop in 3 years, I'd still make fun of Va tech. I think it's just the way it is for the handful of schools that have gotten caught more than everyone else.

For the record, I don't think OSU has cheated that much more than any of the other top 25 programs in the country. They've just been more stupid or more unlucky about it and gotten caught.
