First pity for Saddam and now I'm feeling envy for Iowa's defense?

I saw the second half of the Alamo Bowl and I would just LOVE for BG to have the fundamental defense shown by Iowa. They played a very solid game, if you ask me. They tackled and when they hit, they wrapped. It was beautiful.


I'm normally very disconnected from any type of emotion. It must be the lack of snow which is throwing my system off kilter.

You really should get that checked out...

Despite the poor season, Iowa is a VERY well coached team.

Ferentz would probably rank in my top 10-15 current NCAA coaches...he's a good coach, and they're always fundamentally sound.

You want good tackling? Watch a replay of the Navy-BC game. Those middies can TACKLE.

Ferentz is a top 5 coach in the nation if you ask me. Also, important to note with Ferentz are his assistants. Ferentz has had the same coordinators since he took over for Hayden Fry 8 years ago. Ken O'Keefe is the O-Coordinator and Norm Parker is a great d-cooridinator. Those two guys could be head coaches at the BCS level and Iowa is very lucky to keep them in place, along with Ferentz, year after year.

There is a lot of talk on Cleveland radio about Ferentz possibly replacing Romeo [you're fired!] Crenel next year.

I can't even begin to tell you how little I want to see another college coach come in here - I don't care how good the guy is supposed to be.

The difference between Ferentz and Davis would be that for Ferentz it would be a return to the NFL and specifically Cleveland.

Butch was a DL coach under Jimmy Johnson in Dallas (with a SB ring). I'm pretty sure he was promoted to Defensive Coordinator for at least one season before taking the head job at Miami. Ferentz & Davis are two nearly identical situations.

The one MAJOR difference would be that Butch demanded total control of all personnel decisions when he took the job. Ferentz was an assistant under Belicheck (along with Savage) in Cleveland. Ferentz & Savage are said to be good friends, and no doubt would work together on personnel issues rather than hand it all over to the HC.

Still, I'm not a fan of bringing up college coaches to be head guys in the NFL. All the Browns fans are talking about Tressel and it got me thinking about the past of college coaches. Seems to me that Jimmy Johnson is definitely the exception to the rule...I couldn't even come up with another successful guy from the college ranks

Thanks for the carification on their backgrounds. Having been around Ferentz for the better part of 6 years I think he would conduct himself in a different manner than Davis did. By pointing out his OC and DC that have been in place since day one in Iowa City it shows that he doesn't need all of the power in the situation. That said, I still don't think it would be a great move for the Browns, but I certainly wouldn't say it was a horrible move and it probably would be as good if not better than what they have done coaching wise since the return.

As far as Tressel, I should have guessed the OSU / Browns fans would be advocating for that, but I just don't see Tressel leaving Columbus.

Weeb Eubank of Miami U. Cradle of Coaches fame was a great college coach and a hall of fame coach with the J-E-T-S Jets. Other than that no college/pro coaches really jump out of my memory banks.

Paul Brown?
I mean, there was a layoff for a couple of years while he was in the Navy, but, he effectively jumped right from Ohio State to the Browns.

Sid Gillman, after having a stint as a Cleveland Rams assistant, went from being the head coach at Miami U to the U of Cincinnati to the LA Rams.

Forgot Eubank, and I cannot believe I forgot Paul freaking BROWN.

Definitely a couple of good examples. Still, it seems to me that the vast majority of good NFL head coaches are guys that have gone through the ranks at the professional level. NFL football is a different nut to crack than college. Romeo is proving to us that by going with a coordinator you're not guaranteed success, but I think your a lot more likely to find a good coach with that route than going through the college ranks.

Ferentz is being tossed around as a candidate for the Steelers job. I hope to god he doesn't get it.

I mentioned Jimmy Johnson. Despite the superbowl victory, don't really consider Switzer a good NFL coach. I coulda coached that team.
