Will open season with Appalachian State. First ever game against I-AA.

Wow. Is it this year or next that OSU plays YSU? The big boys are really beefing up their schedules.

Notes on Michigan's season-opening opponent, Appalachian State

• Appalachian State is an NCAA Division I institution and member of the Southern Conference. ASU fields 20 NCAA Division I sports and has won back-to-back NCAA Division I football national championships.

• The Division I football classifications formerly known as I-A and I-AA are now Division I Bowl Subdivision (FBS - formerly I-A) and Division I Championship Subdivision (FCS - formerly I-AA). The 16-team FCS playoffs are officially known as the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

• FCS teams collected seven wins over FBS teams in 2006. Four of the seven wins came over members of BCS conferences, including two Big Ten teams (Southern Illinois def. Indiana and New Hampshire def. Northwestern).

• Since Division I sub-classifications were officially introduced in 1982, Appalachian State has recorded six wins over FBS opponents, its most recent being a 20-16 win at Wake Forest in 2000.

Ap State will be no walkover for UM.

But Michigan will still win easily.

So Michigan is playing Appalachian State,

tOSU is playing Youngstown State,

Wisconsin is playing the Citadel,

Purdue is playing Eastern Illinois,

and Minnesota is playing North Dakota State all out of the Championship SubDivision (1-AA) ranks. Now that's some serious scheduling Big Te(n)leven.

Even when the the top teams in the Big Televen did schedule 1-A teams, PSU goes and schedules both Buffalo and Temple in the same year. Kudos to you Big Televen on showing why you are the best conference in football as so many of your fans would claim.

OSU has had some tough games/schedules the last couple of years and they have a tough schedule for six years after this upcomming season. They always try to play one in state team to keep the money in state. It just so happens in it YSU this year. So what. BG has played 1-AA teams. Hell BG belongs in 1-AA.

OSU has USC for two years, Miami U (FLA) for two years, and then Oklahoma for two years. Do not forget they had played Three #2 ranked teams last year, played Texas two years in a row, Had to go to Wisconsin three years in a row (whatever the hell that was about?)

They deserve a year with a little weaker competition. It may be good strategy on their part. They are in a "rebuilding year" if you can call it that and the young players will benefit from easy competition until they play Wisconsin their toughest game next year. I am not sure how long ago they added YSU and Syracuse to the schedule but if it was recently enough that they had an inling they might be without troy, gonzo, ginn etc. then it was great strategy. Building for the '08 season where they have a real good shot at being back in the title game.

anyways, get over it and go play 1-aa Tennessee State or Liberty again.

Does it make you feel like a big man when you berate a MAC school

OSU's idea of a OOC schedule starts with scheduling four home games... then if need be go on the road for one... when playing instate teams with the exception of Toledo and UC... the games will be played on a "Neutral" field... at PBS and/or Browns Stadium.

If OSU wants to impress me... play 6 road games... and 6 home games... the two OOC games don't necessarily have to be USC, Florida Gables, or LSU... but schedule an Ole Miss, Texas AM, an Oregon, a Boston College... and I might give you a little more credit.

Of course... because of OSU's athletic budget issues they insist on Ohio State playing as many home games as possible.

I can't argue with OSU's scheduling strategy. If I could schedule 4 OOC games and rake in the kind of scratch they generate, I'd do the same thing.
