Wow. Just wow.

Remember a few weeks ago when one of our verbals decommitted to Toledo because what Clawson told him just wasn't "impressive" enough? That just might be accurate, because UT's coaches are actually out there talking up Toledo being right on the cusp of playing in a BCS game.

If the naive recruit ever happened to ask why Ball State wasn't realistically in the BCS picture after doing what UT purports to soon do, Beckman claims Toledo will be different because they're in a better "media market," citing (without laughing) Toledo, Detroit and Cleveland. You know, you can't pick up a paper or watch the news in Detriot without Rocket Football being brought up.

I guess stoking false hopes is fair game in recruiting, but this guy is selling with a straight face Toledo soon ready to ride off into the BCS on the strength of their media market. I guess anything remotely realistic Clawson probably told him is downhill compared to that.

Wow, who put the crack in the welcome-to-Toledo gift bags?

If you remember a few years back, Toledo Tubby Tommy was basically telling the recruits that Toledo was going to be the next team added to the Big East.

I will give Beckman credit for thinking that if they beat OSU, Purdue, and Boise and run the table the rest of the way that they could be BCS-bound (not sure of FIU is really important an OOC opponent but if they lose to them, they are not going to be a BCS buster).

His biggest problem is that he has to face the Falcons IN Bowling Green this year!

His optimism may have something to do with his branding. For instance we will not be contending with the University of Toledo Rockets, chaps, we will be contending with the City of Toledo Rockets. Nice angle: washing the laundry, so to speak, could help his program enormously. Along these lines I wonder if he has marketed his unfolding ambition as a Mid American Conference team, or an as yet to be revealed Mighty American Conference team?

Eh, whatever. Tell the kids anything you want but that program has a looooooooooooong way to go before they can talk about busting the BCS. Wouldn't surprise me to see UT go 0-4 in that non conference sked.

Their new basketball coach was saying before the season how important it was to win X number of games to make the NCAA tourney. Since Beckman has coached previously in the MAC, he should know better.
