Changes at Miami brewing. Miami might go independent?

Just saw this. A report on budget issues at Miami paints a pretty bleak image. The final paragraph is definitely of note:
"If revenue growth of this level is not possible and a 15 percent operating budget cut is required, then we recommend that the university seriously consider our participating in the MAC," the report said.

Luckily it seems like this is just wishful thinking on the part of a "campus-wide task force" (aka jealous egghead professors) and not any type of binding policy document.

The holy war this would spark if ever attempted doesn't seem to be worth it over the couple million dollars of savings it would supposedly generate.

No doubt an AD would want to reduce the athletic department and athletic spending. I'm sure he'd also recommend the removal of the AD position.

And certainly the Task force was obviously headed by "jealous egghead professors". Who else would recommend reducing academic programs, classes, increasing class sizes and hiring more lectures/temporary faculty.

This is a reality for many MAC schools. Money is not going to be there and choices are going to be made. Athletics is an easy target although it is easy to argue it could backfire on a school that cuts too deep. Eliminating track, although unpopular, does not have the same ramifications as cutting DI football. If it ever comes to that the school that cuts DI football will be closely studied and debated for many years among college administrations.

I'm sure a similar report would recommend the same for MOST mid-majors in order to correct balance issues.

I doubt the MiAudi Trustees would approve such action.

Here is the composition of the task force per the report. Clearly a bunch of regular ol' ESPN devotees:

Co-Chairs
Chris Makaroff Chair, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Steve B. Wyatt Chair, Department of Finance

Members:
Robert Applebaum Professor, Department of Sociology and Gerontology
Phyllis Callahan Senior Associate Dean, College of Arts and Science
Mary Jean Corbett Professor, Department of English
David Creamer Vice President for Finance and Business Services
Heath Ingram President, Associated Student Government*
Barbara Jones Vice President for Student Affairs
Rebecca Luzadis Associate Professor, Department of Management
Cathy McVey Senior Director for Strategic Communication & Planning, IT Services
Lisa Santucci Associate Librarian
Dave Sauter Registrar
Ronald Scott Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity
John Skillings Interim Provost
Jeffrey Wanko Associate Professor, Teacher Education
John Weigand Chair, Department of Architecture and Interior Design
Amy Wentzell Administrative Assistant, Housing, Dining, and Guest Services
Qihou Zhou Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering

And professors are NEVER jealous towards other programs outside their field and would NEVER seek to make their lives easier by pharming out lecturing and teaching to others to enable them to focus on their research.

You know what, I typed up a big response, But its not worth it. I have to much s**t to do, that actually does bring in money to a university (unlike most Athletic teams).
