Globetrotter,
5 year show cause for Tressel so you can stop this fascination of him being hired by us or anyone.

Do you even know what that means? Its probably far more likely that he goes to a team like BG now then it ever was. Thats if he gets back into coaching before that 5 years.

The language in the show-cause penalty is unique but clear: A school could face its own penalties just for giving Pearl a job.

Pearl and the assistants under him are banned from participating in any and all recruiting activities defined by bylaw 13.02.13, which prohibits them from contacting recruits.

However, it does allow any of the four, if they were to be hired during their show-cause periods, to evaluate talent.

Jones, Forbes and Shay, for example, could be hired in spring 2012 and have their recruiting abilities -- but not evaluating privileges -- restricted until Aug. 23. The same is true of Pearl, until the expiration of his show cause in 2014.

"The infractions process is difficult. Although we do not agree with every aspect of the Committee On Infractions' decision, we appreciate the efforts of the enforcement staff and the committee to resolve this case in a timely and reasonable manner," Stu Brown, attorney for the three, said in a statement Wednesday.

The NCAA cannot hire or fire coaches. Under a show-cause, a school can hire Pearl and that school does not have to appear in front of the committee on infractions to do so. Pearl and a potential employer would have to write a letter to the committee stating they agree to abide by the restrictions and then report back every six months. The only time the hiring school would have to appear in front of the COI is if it wants to challenge the committee's restrictions.

Pearl and his assistants were fired by Tennessee on March 21. Pearl was suspended for eight SEC games by conference commissioner Mike Slive; the four were also under off-campus recruiting bans and Pearl had his salary docked -- all self-imposed violations instituted by then-Vols athletic director Mike Hamilton.

Maybe I am understating how big of a deal it is because he would be such an upgrade here.

Why do you think Kelvin Sampson is still coaching in the pros? It is a very big deal whether you believe that or not.

Clem Haskins as well. Never going coach again after getting that put on his resume.

I think Globetrotter and Dustin are the same person. No matter the argument, they just don't get it.

There is a RIGHT way to do things, and there is a WRONG way to do things.

Jim Tressell chose to do things the WRONG way. We don't want him, we don't need him.

Are we all not mature enough that this conversation doesnt have to devolve into insults?

Maybe we should just hire the leader of the Boyscouts to be our head coach. I think that maybe there are a some here that are a bit out of touch with reality. This kind of thing happens everywhere. You are overstating his wrongdoings.

O$U got off easy compared to Southern Cal...they should be very grateful. $$$ talks and O$U makes a mint every year.

GT, what's your beef with Clawson? The guy had to clean up some messes here and FINALLY is back to the 85 scholarship level. IF he doesn't produce in the next couple years, THEN I'll agree we'll need to replace him. With 21 starters back next year and 18 (according to the 2011 depth chart) in 2013, we're loaded for bear. I wouldn't bet against Coach Clawson knowing his track record.

I have to give OSU "some" credit compared to USC. At least OSU worked with the NCAA and made some attempts to do the right thing (after bungling the matter several times). Terrell Pryor did them no favor when he started telling the NCAA additional infractions that OSU was not aware of (as he attempted to get the NCAA to declare him ineligible so that he could become eligible for the supplemental draft).

OSU fans complain about the NCAA giving the players a five game suspension, but the NCAA agreed to the punishment that OSU gave out.

OSU fans complain about the NCAA making OSU return their share of bowl money, but the NCAA agree to what OSU offered (IMO - OSU should have to return the ENTIRE Sugar Bowl take of $17 million and been ineligible for ANY conference bowl proceeds - not just the Sugar Bowl monies).

Nine scholarships are not going to have a major impact on OSU. The incoming players can be red-shirted and still enjoy four bowl games. For Illinois or Indiana, you bet that the scholarship reduction would have an impact. And you can bet that OSU will find a way to reward UM the payout in his contract if they have a good year next year.

What else could OSU have done -

1. Should have declared a bowl ban for this year immediately
2. Made Tressell pay the $250K fine that Gee said he was going to pay when he "resigned/retired"
3. AD Smith should have kept his mouth shut about raising hell if the NCAA elected to give additional sanctions above and beyond what OSU was doing on its own (good move not to appeal the sanctions)

Nothing against Clawson. Nothing for Clawson either. I am lukewarm on him, not against another year, but if we give up the opportunity to get someone that I think might take us up a couple levels I think thats a mistake.
