1999 QB Drafts
All these QBs drafted in 1999 had high hopes, but where are they know. I heard last year that Cade McNown was a chef at a restaraunt in Miami.
TAMPA, Fla. -- Akili Smith was released Monday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the latest NFL team to part ways with the quarterback who was the third overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft.
Smith was only with the Buccaneers after the team agreed to sign him so he could participate with an NFL Europe team, the Frankfurt Galaxy, this summer. The Galaxy's season ended on June 4, and Smith returned to Tampa for last week's mini-camp.
Taken by the Cincinnati Bengals, Smith was a member of the heralded 1999 quarterback draft class, which included Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNown, all of whom were among the top 12 picks that season. Only McNabb and Culpepper, starring for Philadelphia and Minnesota, remain in the league.
Smith appeared in just 22 games, starting 17, in four disappointing seasons with the Bengals. He signed with Green Bay before the 2003 season, but was cut.

Yeah, I hate how everyone piles on Couch because the Browns blow. First of all, he was 2 years ago so it's obvious the problem was Butch Davis all along, and second of all, who was the Browns qb that took them to the playoffs since they re-entered the league? Tim Couch can still make it in the NFL if healthy and given a chance.

Thank God! Not real surprising though since the Bears drafted Orton this year. I'll likely never forgive the Bears for passing on Josh Harris and drafting Craig Krenzel before him, even if he is Mister Microbiology major.bgsufan1972 wrote:I dont feel like starting a new thread, but did anyone see where TOSU QB Krenzel was released by 'da Bears

Well Krenzel was the only bears Rookie to win 3 straight games starting his career. And to make things worse his QB rating was a 49.8, and a completion rate of only 36%. But hey, his Microbiology must have paid off.UK Peregrine wrote:Thank God! Not real surprising though since the Bears drafted Orton this year. Granted, the O-line sucked worse than a clogged Hoover-but he still couldn't throw for anything. He constantly threw interceptions and what was with his crying bit?? Sure hurting yourself hurts, but COME ON you're an NFL QB.Metz wrote:Why? He was a good QB that got stuck behind an offensive line that didn't know how to block. As a Browns fan, I didn't expect him to be our savior with no one blocking for him.golfertk14 wrote:gahh! Don't ever mention Couch's name here ever again!!

Every QB feels the pressure in the pocket, some just handle it better than others. The pressure causes miss-throws. He wouldn't have made it to the NFL if he couldn't throw for anything. And I can guarantee you'd be crying to.golfertk14 wrote:Granted, the O-line sucked worse than a clogged Hoover-but he still couldn't throw for anything. Eli Manning is only a rookie, he just needs time to adjust to the pro level.golfertk14 wrote:Mike, Mike, Mike....There have been MANY QBs that were good and then made it to the NFL and couldn't throw for anything.Metz wrote:He wouldn't have made it to the NFL if he couldn't throw for anything.
Eli Manning?
Tommy Maddox?
Carson Palmer?
Sound familiar???
Tommy Maddox, OK your right on that one except for that one season.
Carson Palmer is also young, he just needs time to. I think he will become a good qb with time.

Honestly...if they couldn't throw, they would get cut because there would be other QB's that are better. Where is your common sense? Do you honestly feel QB's that you say suck would be getting paid if they didn't know how to throw a football?golfertk14 wrote: Mike, Mike, Mike....There have been MANY QBs that were good and then made it to the NFL and couldn't throw for anything.

I wouldn't give up on Eli Manning just yet, and Carson Palmer is going to be an All-Pro this year. As for the Couch bashing, I'm with the people who say he didn't have a chance behind that terrible offensive line. If Couch didn't have that shoulder injury he would still be an NFL starter. Instead we see him grinding up the previous day's unsold burgers to throw into the chili that Golfer serves up at the drive-thru.golfertk14 wrote:Metz wrote:Mike, Mike, Mike....There have been MANY QBs that were good and then made it to the NFL and couldn't throw for anything.
