Michigan will punish debris-throwing fans

ANN ARBOR (AP) - The University of Michigan says it will punish fans who threw debris onto the field during Saturday's game against Notre Dame.

Athletic director Bill Martin says officials are reviewing video from the game to try to identify the culprits.

Martin sent an e-mail to season ticket holders saying anyone who is found to have thrown an object may be prosecuted and will have their season tickets revoked.

Fans in student sections began throwing bottles and other objects in the fourth quarter, when officials reviewed two plays.

A photographer was hit in the head with a bottle and was taken to the hospital.

Upon watching the game last week I would say their were thousands of people throwing items onto the field. I guess this could at least be a way for people to get tickets to the remaining games.

good. I was hoping there would be consequences. That was a ridiculous display by the fans. The officials made the correct final call with the help of replay every time and people still bitch. I hate it when people refuse to admit when they're wrong about calls even when they see a replay. Those were some pretty obvious overturns if ya ask me.

Uh.....well actually I think the very last call was rather dubius at best. There was no way they could for sure tell that Henne had fumbled the ball BEFORE breaking the endzone plane. I still don't get that call. If you remember they were trying to look into this dark hole and mass of bodies. There was just no way you could come away from that with undisputable evidence of a fumble. It was a bad call in my opinion. :-\

But like you've said , there is no excuse for throwing things on the field. I can just understand their anger and frustration. Frankly , I don't remember Michigan fans getting this upset with a call before in that manner ever. Michigan fans I've thought are pretty docile in Big House. It rarely gets really loud in that stadium despite the fact that there are 110,000 fans every game. Obviously from the video replays they saw what I saw, it was obviously bad call , but still no excuse for littering their field.

no way man -- that ball came out immediately. Plus the ruling on the field was that he never broke the goal line so that wasn't even an issue. That ball was clearly behind the LOS when he fumbled. Easy reversal to make. I had it recorded on DVR and watched it about 50 times. That ball was out.

The thing that got me with that is they replayed that, they replayed a clear fumble in the first quarter, just to see who might have had possession first (when a UM player came out of the pile with the ball), but the play before the endzone fumble, Henne ends up laying halfway across the goal line, but they never go upstairs to take a peek. (Sure, they might have looked at it in the booth when it happened, but they didn't take the time to stop play and really break it down like the others.)

I think instant replay is good, but if it's going to be that hit-or-miss in its application, I'm not sure it's helping.

Yup, I don't even think Henne ever even had possession of the ball.

Part of the problem, and what made people really angry is that they never showed the replay to the stadium (at least I don't think). I looked for it and never saw it, and was upset by the call. However, that doesn't excuse the behavior of the student section. I think Michigan is taking the right course of action in revoking tickets.

As for instant replay in football....I've never been a real fan of it. I don't see where it has made things any easier, or better, or less hazardous, or etc, etc, etc. Sure some calls get blown by refs every now and then. I've also seen calls botched by the review guys too. Humans are not perfect, and no matter what steps are made to instill prefection, sooner or later something will fail and mistake will be made. I geuss I'd just rather leave it to the zebras on the field, and let the game happen as it may. However I have a feeling that it's here to stay, and I'll just have to deal...

And they won't. Especially a play like that, there's not much of a reason to show a failed QB sneak, not to mention one with a possible fumble. I think they said it on the ABC broadcast that the replay officials have access to all the angles the TV truck has, but not the scoreboard cameras. So they're not going to show what they have and risk having an official get a look from a different angle (or something like that, I think).
