Ohio State officials apologize to Texas visitors for fans' behavior

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State University officials said they have apologized in e-mails to Texas fans who complained about being harassed while visiting for Saturday's football game.
"I feel bad that thousands of Buckeye fans are being painted with a bad brush because of a few," athletics director Gene Smith said Wednesday.
Smith said he has responded to about a dozen e-mails from visitors who said Ohio State fans were drunken, violent and used foul language.
"We're sorry. We need to treat our visitors with class," Smith said. "But at the same time it's 105,000 people in a highly emotionally charged time frame. And there were a lot of Texas fans who had a great experience."
No. 2 Texas defeated No. 4 Ohio State 25-22 Saturday night in the much-anticipated first meeting between two of college football's most storied programs.
Ohio State President Karen Holbrook also has responded to several dozen complaints from University of Texas fans, spokeswoman Emily Foster said. One of Holbrook's apologies ended up in a blog on the Web site of the Austin American-Statesman newspaper.
"We have been working very hard to change a culture from one that is disrespectful to one that is welcoming," Holbrook wrote. "Obviously there is still much work to do."[/b]
