http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/st ... ock/051101 Racists may be a stretch, but there is no good explanation for this. Just gives you even more reason to hate Notre Dame.

I don't know if it's racist so much as it's stupid. Weis doesn't deserve the extension now, and Willingham didn't deserve it then. A college coach needs to prove he can consistently recruit talent as well as being able to win football games. That is half of his job and he has never tried it.
After 6 months at my job, I had a good review and received an incremental raise. I was not given job security for 10 years and a tripled salary. Notre Dame football is a different planet, and often times, the people involved act that way.
F Notre Dame -- I don't need any more reasons to hate that program...and I'm 1/4 Irish.

All this appears to be, is Notre Dame protecting itself from the NFL. It's not about Weis's or Willingham's respective records at this point with ND. It about Weis being a proven NFL commodity with an offense that works and wins Super Bowls. While Willingham is a college system coach that had an offense that was decent at best and was by no means an offense the NFL could get excited about.
Weis only had something like a 1.5 million buyout in his contract and with his success with the Patriots and now ND, the NFL would have likely come calling and still might. 1.5 mil. is nothing to the NFL. It keeps the other colleges away from thier coach, but not the NFL. So the key to this whole thing is that ND likely increased the buyout clause considerably with reworking Weis's contract to diswade NFL teams from coming after him. To me, it's not about being black or white for ND, it's about GREEN! They are only trying to protect their investment in Weis. The NFL will undoubtedly knock on Weis's door, whereas Ty never heard a peep. The increased buyout makes it less tempting to try to steal Weis away, JMHO.

What UK said... I agree 100%. Love ND or hate them (and I like them simply because my dad and sister went there), they aren't a racist school.

Hate to reply again... but check out Ivan Maisel's response to the column. It's pretty good.

Hmm...interesting. If you look at when I posted my comments and when Mr. Maisel posted his article, it makes me think Ivan stops by AZZ to get his material and ideas.

Would have been better if he'd have linked to Whitlock's trash at the end where he said "Racial? Nope."

Code: Select all
Weis has talked about his love of his alma mater and his desire to retire from coaching there.
So why exactly did he get the raise? If an NFL team wants him, they will get him. If he says he wants to retire at ND and has spoken so enthusiastically about ND, then they wouldn't have had anything to worry about...

A NFL team wont match 40 million for a head coach.

they don't have to pay $40 million for him

I just think it would be funny if Notre Dame only won about 3 or 4 games next year. They probably won't, but it would be funny.

Jason Whitlock is a moron.
My buddy lives in Kansas City and he forwards me the ridiculous crap he writes that is more on topic than this and it is garbage.
The thing is, he probably doesn't agree with what he says he is just trying to make a name for himself. Whitlock went to Ball State so as MAC fans we kind of have to claim him as our own, but I still say MORON.
