I am hearing that there is a good chance a certain school just north of BG may be losing three football scholarships this year due to the NCAA "points" for academics/transfers etc. I do not know the name of this program, but know you can lose up to 10% of your scholarships if players, transfer, drop out, flunk out etc. Maybe one of you can help out with the details. I would be a shame for a kid to have been offered, and then pulled at the last minute!!

I wouldn't doubt this. I've seen a lot of kids transfer out over the last couple of years because of playing time, etc. There were a couple this year that just didn't make it back for the season because of what I heard were academic difficulties. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 6 that had left over the last couple years because of a transfer/academics and add in another that Amstutz removed from the team for his supposed involvement in that fight last year. That's at least seven. Anyway, ESPN had an article on this about a month ago and I posted it on the UT board asking if anyone thought this would affect me (because I was concerned that it would) and got no response. I would say that right there even made me more nervous. FWIW, I think that it said the NCAA would reveal its findings in February.

I haven't heard anything about his, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Remember these APR rates are from the mid 90's when a different coach was in place and there was not this emphasis and threat. Recently UT has done a great job with graduation rates. The latest numbers coming out for kids from '95-'98 have the football program with a 70% graduation rate.

I was under the impression that the NCAA was not going to do anything yet about APR rates because they are in the process of redesigning how they get the APR rate.

If 3 scholarships are lost it won't be for long, because there is a committment to academics among athletes at UT now. Also, since UT normally keeps 1 or 2 scholarships in hand every year......I don't think losing 3 scholarships is going to hurt anybody. Maybe it will mean we will only have 5 running backs on scholarship instead of 6.

That's one of the things that is still being debated on within the NCAA. When they come out with graduation rates for a school, a kid that transfers out and is in good standing does not count against the rate. However, in the NCAA's APR rates that came out last year it does count against the school even if the kid was in good academic standing.

Several NCAA members have argued over this piece of the APR and it could be changed before all is said and done.

Yeah, the latest report of utrockets.com has me feeling a lot more hopeful now. I read it a couple of days ago, but I believe they said that by the NCAA standards, the Rockets rank sixth in the MAC by these measures.

Overall, UT ranks 4th in the MAC with a 82% graduation rate.

Football - 70% is 6th in the MAC and five points above the national average.

Men's Basketball - 67% is 6th in the MAC and nine points above the national average.

Women's Basketball - 93% is 1st in the MAC and 12 points above the national average.


10 of 12 MAC schools (83% of the MAC) had an overall GSR of 70% or higher, which is the acceptable standard by the NCAA. Only the Big Ten conference had a higher percentage of schools with an overall GSR of 70% or higher.

If they lost 3 scholarships, wouldn't they just reduce the amount they give to a few others to "spread the wealth" so to speak?

UT and basic math don't mix.

I think you're right. I don't believe UT offers a basic math class, only advanced mathematics and calculus classes.
