As we were heading back to SJ I stopped at a roadside fruit stand and got a watermelon and some oranges. I asked the guy about a bag of these brown, peanut looking things, wondering what they were, and he apparantly misunderstood and threw them in with the other fruit so I tried them. Got sort of addicting after awhile but I just found out what they were. Tamarindo- had heard of it but never had any. Very sticky, sour little fruit in pods- my daughter and I couldn't stop eating the little suckers. Definitely can be a different culinary experience there.
Hey who would have thought a thread on mofongo would go into double figures on posts?
Ah man, sorry to hear you're apparently allergic to mango. I love them, myself. Tamarindo is very good. I'd recommend Quinepa if you ever get a chance, though they are way out of season now (try late July/Augustish. I know when we've gone it's always been in June and we were just a little early, where you could get them, but they weren't as ripe as they ought to be.) They're a really sweet little fruit, you bite off the skin, and then there's a tiny bit of fruit around a big seed pod. You basically just put the whole thing in your mouth and suck the juices out of the fruit, then spit it out. Really tasty.
That's me eating one in a fruit stand in Cayey, just to give you an idea of what they look like. I had already bitten into and pulled back the skin on the top half there.

Actually I was still referring to my BIL in the allergic piece- I eat mangos all the time- love 'em. In fact I usually trim out his tree when i'm down there since he gets the nastiness when he does it. And by the way did I mention that I hate you? nobody can really be that young!
OK, now I gotta try Quinepa if I'm ever there in the summer. And now a TWO page mofongo thread!
