I went to The Fabulous Food Show at the Cleveland IX Center tonight. It was my mother's treat.

First off, I was impressed at how many small foodie companies we have in Ohio. It seemed that the best booths had the "Ohio Proud" sign prominently displayed....and most of their offering was GOOOOOOOD! I will provide a listing of my favorites tomorrow.

Second, there were shows with celbrity chefs. My mother purchased tickets to Paula Dean - which I'm not initially a huge fan, but I thought it could have merit. She suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked! She didn't start cooking ANYTHING until 35 minutes INTO her show. She was more in tune with allowing individuals to go up to the stage for pictures, or allowing them to sing, of giving her gifts. It was painful at times.
I don't mind old lady saggy boob, large ass humor, but not with my daughter in my arms. My God, she was AWFUL! I was never initially a fan because most of her recipes are re-hashed Good Housewife and those type recipes from the 50's and 60's. This "cooking show" just enforced my opinion that she is just a fraud.

I would have preferred seeing Ted Allen from Queer Eye fame. I saw him on the large TV screen after the Dean show. He was pan seering some beautiful scallops. I learned more from him in 5 minutes than I did from Fanny Fraud in 45!

Of course many of the women thought she was great simply because they identify her as a "friend". The best part of the show was the producer (Aussie) was putting comments up on the big screen. His thoughts matched my perfectly.

Anyway, I'll post more links as I pull out all of my information. Let me tell you, there are some GREAT food providers here in Ohio.

Most of the TV chefs I see around the UK are generally profane, although there was one fellow called Keith Floyd who's one handed solutions for French cuisine were awesome (and easy), but he was usually under the table by the end of a 30 minute show because his other hand was pouring wine down his gullet non stop.

I've always liked the idea that if I didn't survive as a minor wanna be internet deity, I could be a tv foodie pro. I have a celebrity tv chef on my books, and his antics make me think this is a doable job. The problem with "Dai Chef", Wales' chef to the stars, is that he's missing 2 front teeth. Question is, did the sous chef hit him with the frying pan, or did RUIT?

I'm not quite as violent as my post would lead you to believe. It was just a moronic display of self puffing and profane pap I've ever witnessed. All she talked about was her new eyeglass line, or book, or restaurant, or........ you get the picture.

I would love to be some sort of professional chef. The only problem is that I don't like the hours, being on my feet all the time, etc. So, that pretty much boots me from any consideration.

I'd rather be a good at having fun at cooking.

I do miss the two fat ladies, however. THAT was entertaining education!

For 4 years I think Pisanellos was the only one that mattered. Maybe Myles, depended on the coupons I suppose. Today, when I look at myself in the mirror I think of all those midnight deliveries.... and thank myself that I live somewhere where I can't do it all over again.

Whenever I come back to the States, the first thing I do is find out where the REAL pizza parlour in town is, then comes the submarine sandwich. Unless its Buffalo, the land of eternal drinking hours and live bands, in which case its an order of chicken wings w/ trimmings.

How good was/is Buffalo? If you couldn't be bothered to go out, the bar would deliver the wings, including as many multiples of 6 of Labbat's or Molson's you cared for. I could never get over that. Geoff H, what a star you are!

I'll live longer in exile, but sometimes I wonder if its worth it.

I don't have enough time to watch much food tv, so I haven't seen much of Paula Deen. But I will have to say, her food is pretty darn good.

The last recipie I made of hers was awesome, & I can post the recipie if anyone's interested. It was a Ham & Banana Casserole and it was the most fattening thing ever but it was yummy!:

Butter
12 slices white bread
8 large slices deli ham
4 bananas, sliced on the bias
2 cups shredded Cheddar
2 cups crushed potato chips
6 slices cooked and crumbled bacon
4 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup cream
Pinch freshly grated nutmeg
Salt and freshly ground black pepper


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Butter a 9 by 13 glass baking dish. Butter both sides of the bread and layer 6 of them into the bottom of the baking dish, overlapping them as necessary but keep them even. Layer the slices of ham on top of the bread and then the bananas, 6 more slices of bread, then the cheese, potato chips, and bacon. In a separate bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, cream, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour this over the casserole almost to the top. Bake for 45 minutes until brown and bubbly. Cut into squares and remove with a spatula, like lasagna.

Most fattening ever? I'm not a huge fan of PDeen, but she does have a few recipes I would love to make. For example, her Krispy Kreme glazed donut bread pudding looks to be a winner! Mmmmmmm *dreams of eating dessert all the while arteries begin to block at the thought*
