I love sushi and am always looking for recommendation of what to try next time I go to Uraku, as well as new sushi places to try.

As for me, I LOVE Uraku here in BG! My favorite roll is the Blue Whale and the Sex on the Beach roll is amazing. They also have the best eel I've ever had.

I'm also interested in making my own sushi...does anyone here do so? If so, where do you get your ingredients?

I believe sushi is something best left to the pros to prepare.

Best sushi I've had was in Portland, OR!!

Tell ya what, roll that in flour, then egg, then cracker crumbs & deep fry it! YUMMY!




Seriously, Sushi is something that I have TRIED to like so many times, but I just don't like it. Now I have never had truly good sushi, I'm sure. I've had some homemade stuff that other people told me was good, and I've had it on some good buffets in Vegas (not talking the hunan buff, I'm talking legit $$$ buffets) but man, I just don't like it. I have never had a single piece of sushi that I truly enjoyed, and for that reason I've never had the desire to go to a good place and spend decent money on real high quality sushi. Everyone seems to like it, but me...

Oh well, sushi is lost on me, I guess. Don't like Sashimi either. More for you guys I guess

I consider myself an avid foodie. I'm with hammb. I have TRIED to like sushi but just can't. I've had good sushi (Miami Beach) but I just can't enjoy it. Eel was the worst.

It's not the texture because I LOVE seared tuna, tuna tar-tar, smoked salmon, and pickled herring. It's just something I don't like about the flavor of fish in its most basic form: raw.

Grant, that sushi looks amazing! I've heard so many great things about West Coast sushi. I can't wait until I can go out there someday and try it for myself!

My husband is the same way about sushi...but he will eat California rolls. And there are some rolls that are fried! So sushi may not be a total loss for you guys

I like sushi. I like smoked salmon. Try both of them at the same sitting and each dish tastes dreadful. Kind of like peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Gag. Nothing can ever be as bad as a banana. Unimagineable.

yellowfin or fatty tuna is the best sushi imo...its almost got a bit of spice to it. as far as rolls go, spicey tuna roll or b-52 rolls (i dunno if bg's sushi place makes em, but a few around home do)

ive never had a piece of sushi i didnt like. in fact...favorite food of all time.

I tried Uraku for sushi in BG before the basketball game last night. Not bad.... not bad at all!

If you ever get up to the Detroit area, try Tokyo Sushi in Birmingham. Still one of my favorite sushi joints.

Capital, is your sushi place close to Wayne State? I have an interview there Friday...maybe I could talk the husband into swinging by!

Um, geez... I can't really remember exactly what I had. I've been back a couple times and have just been trying things at random. I had the spicy tuny and the spicy salmon rolls... both were decent, but I think "spicy" may have been a misnomer.

I asked the chef to recommend something to me once and he did a "Dancing Dragon" roll I believe it was. It was beautiful, with eel, salmon, mushrooms and more in the roll, and presented undulating on a plate as a dragon would, with each cut segment having a different colored pile of roe on top of it... green, orange and black alternating. Very dramatic and delicious!

Interesting article about Japanese plans to "authenticate" all things sushi. This will sit well with the bureaucrats no doubt. I am in two minds. How can you duplicate a food experience on opposite sides of the planet? You wouldn't believe the hassles I have sourcing what I need to make chicken wings like I can get them in Buffalo, and even then I settle for a compromise even though my ingredients don't boil down to much more than chicken wings, which are pretty "lowest common denominator" taste-wise, butter, hot sauce, and, uh, one or two other secret ingredients.

You work with what you have. I can't make Bouef Bourguinon like the French do, because my local ingredients just don't work like their local ingredients. If I was that particular about sushi, I would go find a restaurant in Japan.
