More homebrew American Pale Ale w/ 3 lbs of Rye

Post by Pete Segaard »

Tried my hand with an all-grain recipe on saturday, what a fiasco. I ended up with 6 gallons at about 50% efficiency. I don't have a lauter tun yet, this was mashed in a mesh bag in a 5 gallon igloo water cooler. It was barely large enough fo the 10.5 pounds of grain and water. The finished product had quite a bit of flour that the mesh bag was not fine enough to retain.

Boiling six gallons of wort down. I used two ounces of Cascade hops and ended up putting my flameout hops in at 15 minutes with the Irish Moss and the immersion chiller, oops. Did I mention that it was a screwed up brewday.

Here is to getting the wort boiled down to 5 gallons and into a bucket and finally realizing you missed your efficiency and boiling up a couple pounds of liquid malt extract making this a six gallon batch at 1.050. Put the fermenting bucket into the fridge and two days later it is still blowing out the airlock.

I finally took the top off of the airlock and covered it with foil because I could not keep it from plugging up. Even considering the initial headaches I don't believe I will purchase an extract kit again. :drinkers:
