Lack of Ohio recruits

Post by Class of 61 »

I like to spend some spare time checking out the recruiting sites to see how BG and other MAC schools in particular are doing... Despite the fact that we seem to have about 16-17 verbals so far, I'm frankly disappointed that we have only THREE from Ohio. Seems like we should be getting a lot more kids from our home state in what was supposedly considered a good year for Ohio recruits...Ball State seems to be "leading the pack" with NINE Ohio kids verballed so far...the Big 10/11/12? has come in heavy with Ohio kids with OSU as usual leading the way with 12 verbals; Cincy isn't far behind with 11.

I know we've talked about how hard it is to get "blue chip" (or even "red chip"?) kids to come to a MAC school, but it seems like UT of all places, seems to be working hardest at even trying to get the better kids based upon what I've seen regarding offers from "other schools" that the sites list. Guess I'm just "old fashioned" in that I'd like to see more kids from NE and now SW Ohio coming to BG..as they still seem to be the "power regions" for Ohio football. Getting Fla. kids is fine, as long as they stay in school and play...but seems as if we've lost several of those kids before they even hit the field. Current roster has several Fla. kids for example, but Willie Geter stands out as one who has stayed...and played through an entire career in NW Ohio. I recall a big lineman named Dodge who seemed to disappear rather quickly.

I also know that some kids sign with a school, then realize it's the wrong choice....but at least Ohio kids should know a bit more about BG ..or any other Ohio MAC school for that matter... (Akron now has 8 listed BTW)

SW Ohio is a pretty tough region for BG to crack. Ohio State, UC, Miami, Kentucky, Louisville, and now ND all have recruiting ties in the GCL and other Cincy league.

I'm not going to sound the panic alarm, though. Over the past few years we've had several players from Middletown, Huber Heights Wayne, and Trotwood. BG has done a pretty good job in the GWOC.

1 year is a small sample size.

I could care less where recruits are from if they are high quality people and players. If they are local or Ohio kids, that is a BONUS.

Why don't we recruit harder in Indiana? We seem to hit the metro Detroit area pretty hard. We should attempt to get in on the Cleveland pipeline too!!

NE Ohio is always a hotbed for talent...I'd love to see as many kids from the Cleveland/Akron/Canton/Youngstown/Warren area as possible.

Coach did say at the end of the year that they have expanded the boundaries of the "State of Bowling Green." He said that when we needed good players in bulk you could afford to look local, but when you need guys for specific needs, you have to go where you have to go. I prefer to see us get guys from around here, it seems to work out better, but the lure of a speed guy from Florida seems impossible to resist.
