What about FB recruiting?

Post by Class of 61 »

I've been loosely following MAC football recruiting, class of '15. WMU is off and running again, with 8-9 verbals, five of which are 3*rated. Don't know how Fleck is doing it, but he sure seems to be getting some talent to commit. Toledo, N.Ill. and MIAMI all have several verbals too. My question? Where does BGSU stand in this ? You would think the defending MAC champs should be in the mix by now, but we're showing nothing so far.
Anyone know what's going on? #-o

Verbals at this point in the process don't mean too much. Andy Sowder (player personnel director) said something about the intensive evaluation the coaches go through because of the uniqueness of their system and that they don't make offers casually.

Babers & staff proved a lot about themselves as recruiters by reeling in some excellent players late in the process last year and it'll be exciting to see what they do with a full year of preparation.

I raised this same question to Coach Babers on the Falcon Club conference call yesterday....his response was somewhat general, though made sense too. Paraphrasing Babers: " most of the commits you've seen are kids these schools have been "on" since Soph. yrs. or so...with a new staff in place at BG, we're definitely "behind" on paper. Will we be there come Feb.? No!"
Inference was the new guys have to get to know and BE known by HS coaches, especially in Ohio, but elsewhere too. Got to think the level of recruits they were dealing with E.Ill. was a bit different than what might be happening now, though it didn't stop them from getting some good kids who got drafted last week.

First one! Good question, good answer. The second question about basketball recruiting was interesting as well.

The question, as I'd already indicated, had to do with our verbals, or lack of same, as compared to other MAC schools, especially WMU, which has about 9-10 verbals already, UT, which has several, and even Miami. Babers' response was what I'd indicated too, behind now on paper, but will not be that way come Feb.

Guess I figured a MAC champ should be doing well in new recruiting, but it's logical that a new staff, with virtually no prior contacts in Ohio or even recruiting the FBS athlete vs. the FCS guys they' focused on before. As I also said, this didn't stop them from having some NFL. picks.

We'll be fine...I don't think Babers and co are going to have a hard time selling kids at all. Besides...aren't the Aussie giants our first two verbals for 2015?
