Soler and other thoughts

Those are Soler stats for the last three games since his double double against Kent. I'm sick to my stomach. Boy I wanted to win this one. Student section was only 3/4 full today, was up with that. Too snowy for the kiddies. I'm sorry for being a jerk, I'm just pissed about losing another close one. Look out Eastern MI has won two in a row.

Soler has been flaking out lately.

I feel strongly that Erik Marschall doesn't get nearly enough touches in the offense. When he get the ball on the low post, he's very hard to stop. BG needs get him more integrated.

I agree that Marschall should get many more touches. We have a team that could contend for a title next year if we can get some depth at the low post. Losing Soler but hopefully we gain Sullivan, Lawson and Miller next year. I hope we win all the close ones next year.

In all honesty our biggest problem with getting more touches to Soler (or Lefeld for that matter) is that we don't have any guard who can consistently make a good entry pass. The guys gain position in the post and we constantly throw bounce passes at their feet...they then have to lose their position to control the pass.

Soler has always been an enigma. Good games, then bad games...you just do't know what you're gonna get outta the guy.

If Marschall wants/needs to get more touches on offense, can we get a more stops from him on defense? Jerome Tillman got robbed by getting credited with 7 rebounds today . . . Hammb and I thought he was EASILY in double digit rebounds . . . Point is, Tillman is small 6-6 and Marschall is in the 6-7/6-8 range and Tillman owned him today. Marschall comes up with very few defensive stops when it counts and often gets very much bullied in the post. Let's correct the things we can before we worry about someone else in this offense fighting for shots.

There were a few occasions today where the Marschall and Lefeld were rolling to the basket off a screen but they didn't have thier hands up to catch the ball so the guard either didn't make the pass or he bounced it off their foreheads.

Marschall was battling today...he's a freshman from a small school so you have to figure it's going to take him awhile to acclimate to the speed and physical demands of college basketball.

Lefeld has more guts than any player I've seen here since John Flowers. It was painful to watch him trying to walk towards the end of the game, but he hung in there as best he could.

Great points about Lefeld. The issue that I have with Marschall has nothing to do with his game as it stands now. The kid obviously works hard and has been very consistent for us as a freshman.

My point is this . . . Will Erik Marschall be any better in three years than he is now? I don't see a tremendous upside with him. Is he more than servicable? Yes. Will he ever be a great player? I don't see it. I think that Erik Marschall will have a very similar career as Cory Eyink did . . . Show flashes early and then steady out without tremendous improvement in his game.

Unless someone has better eyes than Hammb and I, Lionel Sullivan was on sabbatical today and has been for at least 2 maybe 3 games.

To compare Marschall and Eyink isn't fair. Eyink didn't get nearly as many minutes as Marschall is getting as a Freshman. To be fair to Cory his team had more depth than this current team. I see much more upside with Eric Marschall than I ever did with Eyink. Cory was a good role player with limited mobility. To judge a Freshman that has played a large role in this team, as you have doesn't do anyone justice. L. Sullivan hasn't been to the last two home games. He was at the Buffalo game. Maybe we should start a new thread about a player leaving! I don't know why we bother anymore, team failures and our lack of talent is some of you guys favorite story line. We had plenty of talent on the football field this year. How did that work out for us? Oh yeah Jacobs was hurt! Big deal! So was Western Michigans quarterback and Northern IL. Success comes from many things other than talent. Effort is a large part of it. I enjoy watching this years team for there effort. Just like I hated watching this years football team for their lack of effort and heart. Talent will get you some wins but effort will get you more. Talent + Efffort gains championships.

Agreed. But until we show the ability to consistently recruit and keep talent we're gonna continue to be bitching about this program.

Couldn't possibly agree less. I see FAR more upside in Erik Marschall than I ever did with Eyink or Almanson (but not Netter). Will he pan out? Indicators are hopeful, but who can tell the future? Almanson panned out. Netter didn't, relatively speaking.
