Damn, it was just heartbreak all over again
I just got back from the game. What a long ride home…..between the bad weather and roads out west and the way this one unfolded, it made for a long trip home. First off, the guys played their tails off. Like most of our games, they never gave up but the few times we had lapses, Ohio made us pay for them. But after yet another heartbreaker, this one the toughest of them all for me (double OT at home), I almost don’t even know what to say after seeing them lose yet another game like this. I keep going back to the one play - if we get the rebound off of Mychal Green’s missed free throw when we were by two with just a couple seconds remaining, we win this game. Instead, they kept the ball alive, Sonny Troutman got the tip-in and OU extended the game. We had chances to win it with a last shot in regulation and in the second overtime, but we just couldn’t hit the shot to do it. I seriously think this year we are experiencing some of the hardest, toughest and closest loses I’ve seen for the Falcons in a long time.
Our biggest downfall today in my opinion was the last two minutes of the first half and the first two minutes of the second half. Those four minutes turned a one-point game into a 13-point deficit. Ohio broke open a close game right before halftime with a few baskets to go into the half up six, then came right out of the locker room after the half and hit us with a 7-0 run in just over two minutes to put us down 13. We fought and fought the rest of the way, but just like the Northern Illinois, Buffalo and Akron games, we just couldn’t seal it in the end when we had a chance to. We struggled all day long to get much going inside and for the second consecutive overtime game, Soler didn’t score a single point for us. That hurt. Our backcourt and perimeter kept us in the game, but our front court was almost non-existent offensively with the exception of Patrick Phillips. Yes, Phillips. My hat goes off to the kid, he was by far and away our best presence in the paint and helping us break their zone and he was taking the ball right at them instead of getting tangled-up or bottled-up like some of his teammates.
Anyway, I feel bad for these guys, I really do. Yes, there was some terrible officiating and we didn’t help ourselves by digging another double digit deficit. But until we can close out a game like this, we are going to continue to experience the heartache

I agree. The officials had nothing to do with this. Grab that board on the FT, we win. OU in total got 14 offensive boards. Make a layup at the end for Moon, and we win the game. We lost this game all on our own.
Please note, I'm not ignoring the positive things from today. There were lots. Just no excuses for losing.

Yeah, it really was just another dagger, another heartbreaker. As I posted in another thread, we have now lost five MAC games by a combined 13 points. Unbelievable. Just think, if one possession goes our way in each of those games, we could be 9-2 or 8-3 at this point.orangeandbrown wrote:I agree. The officials had nothing to do with this. im sorry, the officiating had something to do with this, OU point gaurd carries the ball EVERY single time he touches the ball. not too mention the the fact that when robinson was goin in for that layup (when we were down 91-90) got absolutely mugged/raped/whatever you wanna call it, and then we get called for a foul?!?! and when they hit a three pointer in overtime the ref didnt look at his feet because his whole foot was INSIDE the arc!!!!! im sorry but officiating had some to do with this. and the reffs knew they screwed the game up because the RAN off the court and pushed aside some OU players to get in the tunnel. terrible display of officiatingorangeandbrown wrote:I agree. Robinson probably did get fouled on the last second shot, but he still could have made the layup. I don't like for officials to decide the game, so I'm glad they didn't blow the whistle. Green went right up over somebody's back to get the rebound off his missed FT at the end of the first OT too. Again, there was a lot of contact on the play (going both ways). I'm glad they didn't blow the whistle. Too many times MAC officials decide the game by blowing the whistle. I'm glad they let the players decide it today.svillefalcon wrote:not too mention the the fact that when robinson was goin in for that layup (when we were down 91-90) got absolutely mugged/raped/whatever you wanna call it, and then we get called for a foul?!?! and when they hit a three pointer in overtime the ref didnt look at his feet because his whole foot was INSIDE the arc!!!!! im sorry but officiating had some to do with this.
Interesting comment on the 3 in OT. I didn't notice that.
The one thing I do have to rip the officials on was the illegal screen call on Soler. He got popped for one, but Williams didn't on that high "screen" he set all day? Come on, stripes. Our guards got manhandled all day on that screen. Give OU credit, though. If the refs aren't going to call it, keep doing it.

Even if Robinson would have been given the foul, he probably would have missed the free throws anyway. That kid can't shoot and he's no offensive threat whatsoever. He bricked the two free throws he shot earlier. Why in the world was that guy taking the last shot anyway? He can't shoot, so you have him taking the shot. Samarco was hitting everything down the stretch and he passed on a shot to win it to give it up to a brick-layer?BGGrad01 wrote:Robinson probably did get fouled on the last second shot, but he still could have made the layup. You know, it is one thing for you to come here and make an ass of yourself and your school (thankfully your brethren realize how batshit retaded you are), but don't you dare come on this message board and talk smack about individual players. You don't know the first thing about Moon, or anyone on this team, so don't you dare say a word about them. No one here is making personal attacks on OU players, and you are WAY, WAY out of line by making attacks on our players. If you were in my presence I would pound you for being so audacious. Too bad the internet is so..."impersonal."OhioBobcat wrote:Even if Robinson would have been given the foul, he probably would have missed the free throws anyway. Congratulations on the victory; however, if you feel that a double OT victory over an opponent that you consider to be so far beneath your vaunted Bobcats makes you so giddy you think you can come on here and talk down to us, well, I hope you and your small member are really, really happy with the outcome. If 1/3 of our team hadn't fouled out by the 2nd OT the outcome would have been very, very different, I assure you.
You are pathetic. I'm just glad at least one other Bobcat fan has come here to help me maintain at least a modicum of respect for your athletically pathetic university.

My personal favorite poor call came towards the end of the game when Erik Marschall got stripped by one of the Bobcats...and a foul wasn't called. Erik was quite livid as he should have been, although I must say myself and many of the other girls in the athletic band enjoyed it, and some of the others suddenly got more interested in the game.svillefalcon wrote:im sorry, the officiating had something to do with this, OU point gaurd carries the ball EVERY single time he touches the ball. not too mention the the fact that when robinson was goin in for that layup (when we were down 91-90) got absolutely mugged/raped/whatever you wanna call it, and then we get called for a foul?!?! and when they hit a three pointer in overtime the ref didnt look at his feet because his whole foot was INSIDE the arc!!!!! im sorry but officiating had some to do with this. and the reffs knew they screwed the game up because the RAN off the court and pushed aside some OU players to get in the tunnel. terrible display of officiatingorangeandbrown wrote:I agree. Due to just an overwhelming feeling of sadness (and the one classless OU poster), I am not reading every thread. But here are my only three observations likely posted somewhere else:
Had we won the game, the story would be even better but, nevertheless, E Marschall losing his basketball jersey when grabbed and pulled by the Ohio player was very, very funny. He played on for ten seconds till the whistle. I love this kid's attitude, but I wish he would shoot more. I thought I was watching Happy Gilmore where Sandler pulls the guy's shirt up and slugs him. All that was missing was the punch. I was waiting for two things- an OU guard to run through and pull down his shorts or a technical foul from the refs for illegal uniform!
Referees don't usually decide games. OU won this one. But when are we EVER going to get a benefit somewhere somehow. I see somewhere the illegal screen/Soler etc mentioned. L Williams literally slid on two straight possessions in the second half five plus feet to screen off a BG player. With the ref staring at him. I'm not begging- just ASKING? WHEN, at home, do we get anything?
Yes, if we rebound a couple key spots, we win. The biggest rebound we didn't get however (mentioned somewhere) was not the fault of BG players not blocking out, not hustling, not pushing, not scrambling....it was the result of absolute blind luck going the other team's way. I haven't seen any tape, but M Green's second throw missed intentionally (I believe) came off at an ANGLE SIX plus feet to the right of the hoop. That is hard to do. From my angle, I didn't think a BG player could have grabbed it if he was named Nate Thurmond. Not complaining, just stating- we are a very unlucky bball team.
To date.
Let's turn it around and win some. It can happen. We have shown we can play with the best MAC teams on any given night.
Go Falcons!

I agree with many points made above. While this loss was the most painful one this season to date for me, I still love the fight and effort we are playing with, even in these kind of loses. I really like some of the flashes I am seeing out of our players, both from the upperclassman and the freshman. I can only hope....and when I say hope I mean hope like hell....that no matter what happens this season, that next year we can return everyone (minus Soler) and finally get this program back on track. No more transfers, no more players quiting or leaving, no more players getting kicked off the team. I'm hoping that right now we are watching the future of BG's program on the court learning what it takes to win, and not watching the pieces of some other team's puzzle playing here and then going somewhere else.
GO BG!!!
This guy is a total brash troll, no doubt about it. You could be right that he knows absolutely NOTHING about any of the BG players. I really don't know whether he studies them or not.Bleeding Orange wrote:You know, it is one thing for you to come here and make an ass of yourself and your school (thankfully your brethren realize how batshit retaded you are), but don't you dare come on this message board and talk smack about individual players. But I'll tell ya one thing he's dead on about Moon. That kid cannot shoot a FT to save his life, and he did brick two earlier free throws in the game. He's also right that there isn't a player on the team that would be below Moon on my list of guys to take that game winner.
It was a good job by him to get to the hole and get a good layup opportunity. Unfortunately he didn't finish; it almost looked as though he was just hoping for the foul.
I made the "milk run" and what a game. We came up on the short end, but it was a great game. Is Pat Phillips our post up threat? He was nails in there. He is never going to fill up a stat sheet, but he kept us in that game (and Smarco's shooting, of course). Kudos Mr. Phillips. Is Big Matt OK? Man, radio just do not do it justice, he looks like he is in serious pain out there.
OU thoughts: Fears didn't start? Halbert didn't play? Wonder if they are in O'Shea's doghouse. I have seen more OU games than I care to admit and I think Chapman is a better point guard, anyway. He was killing us off the dribble and kicking it out to Green and Troutman who were knocking them in. Unfortunately, I was very impressed with him.
Anyway...

I almost feel bad for you guys with all these close losses......but not too bad. Between BG and Notre Dame, you guys certainly have had your share of close but no cigar losses. But this is basketball, not horseshoes. Close isn’t good enough. We were facing a loss right in the eyes, and refuse to lose and made the plays needed to win. That’s the difference between us and you guys. OU is Playmakers. BG is Heartbreakers. If you make the plays you win, you come up short you lose.

OU wasnt playmakers for you guys against us...the reffs were the playmakers in the game. BG fought so hard to get back in the game and had their hearts ripped out from the reffs. i dont care who disagrees with me because i wont take it. i was right there on the floor at half-court. the officiating was terrible...ohiobobcat, you need to teach your point gaurd how to drib ble the ball because he carries/palms the ball every time he dribbles. i am absolutely sick and tired of you kitty, you can come on our forum and talk up your team, thats fine but dont you dare insult our team on our site...go ahead and do it on your forum but you have no right to talk our team down on here...so if you can keep your little feline mouth shut, that would be great...
