Interesting notes from the BG/UT game

Post by BGSU33 »

FLOYD'S TECHNICAL: Junior John Floyd had another big night for Bowling Green State University. He scored 17 points, the sixth time in the last seven games he's been in double figures. But last night a noticeable mistake by him cost the Falcons something more important - momentum. With 8:06 remaining, Floyd hit a long 3-pointer with the University of Toledo's Jonathan Amos in his face to put the Falcons up 53-51. As the pair ran down the court, Floyd said something to Amos and was hit with a technical foul. It was a five-point swing for UT. Justin Ingram made both free throws and Anton Currie made a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession with the shot clock at two seconds. UT never lost the lead again in its 72-64 victory.

"As a veteran guy, I've got to be smarter than that," Floyd said. "It was a dumb mistake by me and I think it completely changed the momentum of the game."

"You might as well give a hundred technicals in a basketball game if what the referee told me he said was a technical," BGSU coach Dan Dakich said. "You can't blame John, I've gotten technicals with 18 seconds to go in games. I don't blame him. Anybody that's played basketball in a game like this, certainly John has to not to do that, but my God."

Without Floyd, though, the Falcons might not have been in the game at that point. Early in the first half he scored seven consecutive points to get the Falcons out of a 10-2 hole. With Steven Wright in foul trouble, Floyd picked up the offensive slack, tying for the game-scoring lead with Martin Samarco.

"I thought John was really tough," Dakich said. "John's competing."

DUSAN'S INJURY: BGSU forward Dusan Radivojevic was on crutches because of an injured right knee suffered in practice on Thursday. Radivojevic has had an injury-plagued freshman year, missing the beginning the season because of a fracture in his leg and having to wear a protective mask because of a broken nose. - Man, I hope he is okay and that this isn't too serious. Not that he plays much, but the last thing we need is to lose a player too.

REFS: Hank Nichols, the NCAA's national coordinator of men's basketball officiating, was in attendance. - What a game to have him present for!

DROUGHT: In coach Dan Dakich's nine years at BGSU, he has won just once in Savage Hall, in the 1998-99 season. UT leads the all-time series with BGSU 80-74.
