I wonder what kind of effect not letting freshmen park on campus would have on attendance? If kids couldn't pack up and go home so easily, would Saturday events see an increase in student attendance? I know *some* students would still find ways home with upperclass friends or family, and being on campus doesn't necessarily mean an athletic event is the only thing to do, but it would take a part of the "where are the students?" question out of the equation.
Even if the intramural fields are in rough shape, I think it's a "green space" that should be improved upon as intramural fields, not built upon. I don't know that I ever really noticed it before, but there's a bit of a cool feeling heading up along Alumni Drive with the Doyt at the end of a long stretch of green. Throwing a building up in front of that might take away from it. Not to mention seeing the activity going on out there before the first home game this year, it was a pretty solid atmosphere with tents and people stretched out on the grass "tailgating".

There is a parking garage in the 50-year plan, not sure how soon they're considering it though. The new arena was in there as well but this was announced a year ago. Master plan could have changed. The talk back then was that the arena would be North-Northeast of the Doyt I believe.
I know they had a plan for a walkway all the way across campus as well, with no obstructions from traffic. I remember them talking about a tunnel under or a walkway over Mercer Road to lead out to the stadium.
One again, this was about a year ago so stuff may have changed.

I'll let transfer explain his views on parking on campus.

I wonder what type of problem not allowing incoming freshmen to have vehicles on-campus would cause to ENROLLMENT. You would be surprised at the number of students that tell you the main reason they chose to attend was because freshmen were allowed to have cars on-campus (silly reason from my point of view, but we're talking 17 and 18 year olds here - differing views as to what is important). I would guess 5-7% (that may not sound like much, but that's approximately 182-256 students.
The idea about tearing down the Student Service Building - I hear it is going to be done. But that's because the Department of Thatre and Film believe their new building (which is to be housed in the space between Student Services and Kreischer Quad is too small as currently designed in the planning stages and they want additional space.
My understanding of the Convocation Center being at the Intramural fields is it will be housed closer to the Visitors Information Center than Mercer Rd.

Transfer, this one is just for you:
"We don't have a parking problem on campus; we have a walking problem."

In defense of the Lot 6 issue that many have raised, it would not cut down on parking at all. In fact, it may even have the ultimate effect of increasing parking on campus. You see, the erection (heh - I said erection!) of a Convo. center where Lot 6 currently lurks would also be complimented by the paving of the gravel lots around the stadium and increased shuttle traffic from those lots to campus (in the interest of both safety and convenience).
There would be many side-benefits to this location, as well, including Increased visibility and accessability to the venue surrounded by plenty of parking; a much better space for tailgaiting (especially on rainy days!); preservation of expansion space for any future reovation/expansion of the Doyt (this is perhaps the biggest long-term downfall to that location, in my opinion - walling ourselves in, as it were);and, A Convo along Wooster would also help to "frame in" Wooster and help to increase the physical prominence of the University to its visitors.
I am by no means set in my opinion about where a new convocation center might go, but I thought I would play a little point-counterpoint with a few of you (because, as TG will tell, deep down - I'm a douchebag.

What would you do with freshmen who had jobs out of town?transfer2BGSU wrote:I wonder what type of problem not allowing incoming freshmen to have vehicles on-campus would cause to ENROLLMENT. Even there is no good for me, it still blocks the view of the Doyt from campus.

With what TG says I have to toss my vote for any building on the intramural fields. It warms my heart on Saturday morning when I look down there knowing what's to come later that day. Plus marching from the field house over to the stadium would lose a lot of its luster if the way were blocked by a big Convo center. My dearest wish is to renovate AA cause it is an amazing place despite some of its shortcomings.

I honestly don't think we'll ever have to contemplate that because I do not see us as prohibiting freshmen from having cars on-campus. I think it would be too drastic a hit on enrollment.BGDrew wrote:What would you do with freshmen who had jobs out of town?

I don't see any other option but to build a new arena somewhere else. Renovating AA just doesn't seem to make sense. First, where are they going to renovate it? There is zero room around AA to build. Second, if you are going to take on such a project, why not start from scratch? A new arena that holds 8-10,000 would be a nice addition.
let's not beat this dying horse again. you can read plenty about why many think that 8-10K seats aren't needed here:clevelandfalcon wrote: I don't see any other option but to build a new arena somewhere else. I think 7,500 is the perfect number for a new arena.

That was just a number I there out. Personally, I don't really care. The point of the message was about whether to build a new arena or not.
