I'm with you Flip. I hate the thought of putting Dan's employment status on the line because of a couple kids. Unfortunately, it has become an epidemic at BG. You cannot create a program if you cannot keep your kids in the program. Unfortunately it's Dan's job to create a program. It is quite possible he's just run into a rash of really bad luck, but I find that hard to believe.
I know other schools lose transfers, but as I posted above we have lost 8 of our last 10 recruits. I'm not including this year's group, although we've already lost 1 of that group before even putting on a uniform. It's pretty clear that there is something going on that is causing this mass exodus. Dan & Paul need to sit down and figure out what it is, IMO. If they cannot come to an agreement where something gets changed to try and rectify this problem then I think it is time to look for a new coach. I'd love it if Coach Dakich were the one to lead our program in a resurgence, but unless some major changes occur, I'm just not sure how that is possible.

Was it a collection of things said here or soley your own opinions? Just wondering. I have found that Krebs and other coaches are usually pretty good about writing you back.

I agree with you for the most part. Dakich will never change though. That is just the way he is. The players have just stopped listening to him. It happens to alot of programs with coaches. And it's not even the fact that kids are just transfering. That happens in every program. Schools lose kids once in a while but BG loses 2-3 each year! Plus the fact that they have had a crappy team the past several years adds up to the head coach not getting the job done. And what happens if you don't do your job well....you get fired and replaced. That's just a part of life. Cut your losses and get rid of him now because you know if another opportunity ever presents itself to him again, he's gone.

I, too, have found our administrators & coaches to be very good about writing back to their e-mails. Oddly enough the last (and only other) time I wrote Krebs was to congratulate him for bringing back Coach Dakich after he left for WVU. How's that for irony...
My Message to Mr. Krebs:
Brian wrote:Mr. Krebs,
I'm sure that you get many e-mails a day, and I'm sure you don't have time to respond to all of them even if you do get a chance to read through them all. I just wanted to let you know that as an alumni of BGSU, and a big fan of all our sports, I'm very disturbed at the direction our basketball program is heading. I know that all teams/programs will suffer through down years or even stretches of years where they don't perform on the court. I can live with that, as can most other fans, I'm sure. What bothers me is our inability to keep our student athletes on the team. In the coming years this will be reflected heavily in our NCAA graduation rate statistic, and with the recent departure of Steven Wright it doesn't look as though we're doing anything to rectify this situation.
If we look back at our recent recruiting classes it is a very disturbing trend that doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon. In 2002 we brought in Raheem Moss, Ronald Lewis, and Steven Wright. That looked like a pretty good recruiting class, and all those guys even flashed varying degrees of potential to us fans. However, unless Mr. Wright stays in school after leaving the basketball program none of these guys will receive degrees from BGSU. In 2003 we brought in Austin Montgomery, Chris Hobson, Isaac Rosefelt, Reggie Harwell, and Matt Lefeld. Of those only Matt Lefeld is currently enrolled at BG (and still playing basketball as well). In 2004 we brought in Perrick Robinson & Scott Vandermeer; we have already lost half of that recruiting class as well. This year we had one recruit (Jeremy Holland) quit the team and return home before ever even putting on a BG uniform. I find this very unsettling, and I'm sure everyone in the athletic department does as well
I'm a big fan of Coach Dakich. I've met him and he's a great guy. He really seems to have a genuine love for both the town and the university; that is a great thing to see in one of our coaches. He also gets the kids that stay in his program to go to class and earn their degrees. Again that's a great quality for a coach to have. However, I'm really starting to think that keeping him is no longer in the best interests of the program. I don't profess to know what the problems inside the program are, nor do I know the best solutions. I trust that you have taken the time to sit down with Coach Dakich and talk through why these things are happening and what we can do to reverse this trend. Down years will quickly turn into down decades when you cannot keep any of your talented student athletes in the program.
I don't know if my e-mail will have any bearing on what you do, I'd be surprised if it does. I'd even be surprised if you took the time to reply to it. That's not what I'm asking for. I just wanted to make sure that you, being on the inside, had a clearer picture of how things look to us, the fans. Thanks for your time, and keep up the good work. You've been nothing less than a stellar AD in your tenure here, and I trust that you will examine the situation and do the right thing.
But they aren't working hard enough in practice to warrant the playing time. I would expect to see former walk-on Pat Phillips have his minutes increase.

I posted this in chat yesterday with BGGrad and PGY didn't feel that it should have been brought up on the boards until now. But Wright couldn't wait for the season to be over. On instant messenger his away messages were "At Akron...can't wait till the season is over" and stuff like is the season over yet? If you ask me this is a kid that doesn't want to play basketball.
His mind obviously isn't on the game and it has shown each season. He has not improved one bit and he has threatened to quit atleast once a year.
Until this year he hasn't showed much in the classroom only that he is able to sleep through a lecture. This isn't a person you want representing the school. We can all bitch and moan about Dakich and say its his fault and cry that we don't bring athletic players to the program but once we do and take that risk we have kids that could care less about university. It's a no win situation.
Tricky_Falcon wrote: If you ask me this is a kid that doesn't want to play basketball.
I think he is a kid that wanted to play basketball, but not necessarily for this coaching staff. I don't know what his beef was with them, but the kid has tried to quit like 4-5 times now.
Then it's a good thing he is leaving. I honestly don't know what to think about our program it's easy to blame coaches for being hard on players but like most good coaches you aren't there to be the players best friend you're there to guide them to be the best that they can be. If the player isn't buying into that and is way too soft then it's good to part ways. Dakich needs to start recruiting mentally tough players to fit his system. That is one knock that I have. He is recruiting guys that are way too soft and crack as soon as they step foot on campus.
I will give those Dakich haters some room here when it comes to the transfer of Steven Wright. It's never good to see a kid leave the program. I do understand that there have been too many transfers in the last few years. What has really gotten me upset with this whole situation is that a lot of you people are acting like this season on the floor has been usual for us in the past. Quick, someone tell me how many losing seasons Coach Dakich has had in a row. He has only had losing seasons back to back one time. This is going to be his 4th losing season out of 9. Two of those losing seasons, we were 3 games from being above, and the MAC was very competitive those two years. Give me a break. I have tried to listen to everyones argument about Coach Dakich, and I understand that quite a few of you are upset that another one is leaving the program. But dangit, this is getting ridiculous.
Another thing that has chapped my ass reading this thread is saying that we are going to lose at least one or two more kids before next season comes around. Has any one of you that are posting this stuff actually talked to any of the kids that you think are leaving? Now, if any of you have, that's fine, I'll take your word for it. But if not, than I really hate that you are making claims that you nothing about. I think that some of you that are asking Coach Dakich to do an honorable thing and resign need to do an honorable thing. You need to wait until the end of the season, and see how many kids decide that they want out. IF, and I say IF, these kids leave, then yes, I will say that it is time to probably get someone fresh in the program to get it on course recruiting wise, and keep the kids in the program. But until that time, I think that those that think they know more than our AD know as far as how to run the program, and need to find a new coach, need to lay off and let everyone else do their job.
It's one thing to voice your opinion and say that you think it's disturbing with the players that have left. And yes, it's fair to come on here and say that you think he needs to go. But to come on here and say that he needs to do the HONORABLE thing, that is crossing a line with me. What has he done that is not Honorable. Not being honorable is cheating on your wife and not telling her about it, or stealing something and getting away with it. Things of that nature. To hold his players to a high standard on and off the basketball floor to mold them into something that will help them the rest of their lives, that to me is HONORABLE. Resigning because you are being told you need to by the fans, that is not. If Mr. Krebs tells him that he thinks the program needs to go in a different direction, then that would be honorable, because that is someone that knows what is going on in the program. I'm sorry for making this a long post, but I just had to get that off my chest.

And one of those winning seasons we were 1 game over .500 (which probably was a win over Defiance or Urbana or Notre Dame(OH)). Starting with the 02-03 season to present, our record is a cummulative 54-61 and we are staring at the first twenty loss season since ...? And this season's record, I would venture to say, is overstated. We got a lucky win when the opponent tipped-in our winning shot and we beat two non-Div IA teams. We probably should have twenty losses already.
And a standard judge of a good season is twenty wins. While Dakich may only have four losing seasons out of nine, he also only has two 20 wins seasons. I think Kent just recorded like their eighth straight 20 wins season with the win last night.
My point? Dakich has been mediocre at best. He has put together just two really good teams in nine seasons. Is that good enough?

Any theories as to what is different these past 4-5 years versus the first 4-5 years that Dakich was here? Why the recent mass exodus that didn't exist during the early part of his tenure?
There was a brief discussion regarding an assistant coach that left a few years ago. Did we used to have some type of calming or soothing influence within the program that could filter some of Dakich's harsher messages?
