This is a very odd signing. It doesn't address the fact that we have one returning PG on scholarship who happens to be (a) a senior, and (b) of very limited talent. (This signing makes me SUSPECT that there actually HAS been some player turnover that we don't yet know about.)

His low FTA total and rebound totals suggest a passive player for someone with his height. Furthermore, he only played 20 mpg. I'm guessing that he has plenty of raw physical talent. On the bright side, there are not many players who combine excellent leaping ability with decent outside shot, which he apparently does. Furthermore, these statistics reflect nothing about his defensive skills or his role in team's offense.

The most impressive statistic concerning Hamblet is this: his team went 27-3. He was the fifth option on a team that perhaps might have been good enough to compete for a MAC title last year. Let's also remember that BG has been associated with other good prospects, yet we chose to sign him relatively early in the Spring. That says something about how our coaches value his abilities.

Nonetheless, this signing doesn't quite blow my doors off.

I just heard Coach on the radio. The official LOI was in and he was allowed to comment. He is very fired up about this kid, FWIW. He also compared this year to the year after Netter left and was very, very enthusiastic. I hope he's right. I'd love to see him get us back on track.

DD called him the best all-around player on a very good JUCO team.

Did he mention Otis Polk?

(I haven't seen any announcements in this press on his official signing.)

Yes, He said Polk had signed and had a 3.5 GPA and had lost 12 or 15 lbs. already. I was very surprised to hear that they had signed Chris Knight. Could be one heck of a class: Sims, Larson, Polk, Knight and Hamblet. Time will tell.

Plus you have to add Miller into that class as well. Good looking class. But we've been down this road before...

Pehaps with all the comings and goings of late, maybe DD is like most of us and can't figure out how many scholarships he has left to give? #-o
